| Anybody try one of these?
I have been reading entries in the Mosin area since Thanksgiving, then finally registered so that I could see pics posted of different rifles. I have two nagant's Polish M-44, and a 91/30. I use both of these for deer hunting - 44 for brush and 91/30 for open fields. My eye sight no longer being those of a 20 year old, I decided to go to ebay and try one of their scope packages to put on the long gun and found out like I've seen in other posts here that they did not work (this is in fact how I found these boards). Any way, Mike seemed to have a good method of a fix for this problem and I have been researching ways to use the scope and rings I purchased and to possibly try a dovetail to weaver adapter to raise the scope up a bit to normal scope height. Do these type of mounts work - or will they also be suspect to "recoil issues" Here is a link that shows the different details off of eBay. I have seen them or other variants from other sites - B squared was one that comes to mind. Any opinions? Thanks in advance for your advice. Good question, can't say as I've seen anybody post any results using that adapter. Why don't you try it and let us know how well it works? Be nice to know about another option. AFAIK, this dovetail thing is only on the 91/30's, but I ain't swearin' to that.

works for 91, 91/30, 91/59, and 91/67B........with the 3/8" to 7/8" adaptor, it looks like it would work really well, except it says the length is only 2", and that makes me think that the rings will be over-hanging on each side; unless you maybe mount 2 of the adaptors end-to-end on the dovetail, that will give you a 4" long mount....i would hope that would work, only prob i could see happening is if the 3/8" dovetail isn't perfectly cut, it could cause the adaptors to not line-up exactly.

| Thanks for your replies
I've got this christmas money burning a hole in my pocket - well after buying the kids gifts not too much . . . I might give it a try. I'll have to get a smith to take the sight off, my father-in-law and I couldn't get the sight to budge after taking the pins out. I'll update later after I see the dovetail, and what the smith thinks of the project. Thanks again.

a competent smith should be able to remove it, if it's a fly-by-night smith, he should keep his day job

yes, front sight should be removed if bottom of scope is at a lower altitude than top of sight, or else you will see top half of front sight shield in scope view.

As I recall, the rear sight just stays on via one pin. There's a spring under it which needs to be compressed a bit when mounting the new base. I put a MoJo sight on my 91/30 and I'm no gunsmith.
Has anyone tried the S&K mount?

I have the S&K mount. It's good. the rings are a little strange in design but it's solid. With a little locktite on the threads its not going anywhere. It's just hard to put a scope mount on a rifle that costs as much as it does. But as you can see I went all out on this one so I've put about 3x the value into it. I think the .22 rings would be the best design for a 91/30.

I've had good results with the e-bay mount and NCStar LER scope on my M44 (Nataliya).
If you do it right it works fine. The problem is that very few people seem to do it right. Took me a couple of tries.
Basic rules:
- Only use 2 of the 3 elevation screws supplied, and keep them inside the existing sight mounting area (see picture). Make sure you remove the sight leaf spring with the rear sight.
- Do not overtighten any screws... they will strip.
- Back the locking screws (located on the side of the mount to lock the elevation screws) out about 1 turn before turning the elevation screws.
- You can use the existing pivot pin from the iron sight, instead of the kit-supplied allen screws, at the forward attaching pivot point. I used the screws, but the pin will give a more reliable anchor point.
Camo Nataliya (picture) holds zero just fine (one year and several hundred rounds later). Here is what a $60 scope and mount look like when properly mounted on an M44/M38.

Nice setup Enscribe. S&K offer two different options with their rings. Weaver and their own I believe. A guy I met at the range said the Weaver rings were very good, but finicky to put a scope in. Which rings did you get?

Mine came with the mount. They plug into the sight base and tighten with tension on both sides. I bought it from CTD. Had it bore sighted at my local range and it shoots minute of man but I didn't have match ammo. I could keep em in about 10 inches of spread. I plan on getting some better ammo and trying again.

Shooter, there ARE 2 pins on the 1940 and later models, once they are pressed/knocked out, then the mount will slide forward and off(may need a lil help to break free tho). Good Luck.

also, not 100% sure about all of them, but i've seen a few of the 1940+ rear sight bases have both the 2 pins and the set screw on top of rear part of base, like in the older model bases.

the set screw hole would be on the flat black horizontal section where adjuster of sight leaf rests....the dimple you see is a dimple made into the leaf spring to help lock it into the base.
