Justus, the main thing we were talking about is that every connection is a weak spot....by using an adaptable rail then a mount to fit the weaver, you technically have one more connection that could go out....just make sure the aluminum is not easily bendable by hand(mainly the vertical parts of the aluminum)or you will definitely suffer from warpage and where there's weak aluminum, there will be weak "jaws" that bite onto the weaver rail, or weak weaver dovetail that meshes when tightened onto....and possibly weak jaws on the 3/8" adaptor....that would in my opinion be the spots to look for.

gotcha, Mike... thanks for all the help. I wonder if any of these parts come in steel or something else stronger than alum. But at that point the cost and complexity would make jmeck's new mount a better option. It is pretty sweet and fulfills my goals. I hadn't considered it as much as it is so new. I've been thinking on this for a while.
jmeck, it appears so, but yours is high enough that the front globe can stay on and not visible, right?

steel would be excellent yes, except for the part that mounts against the dovetail on receiver, in that steel to steel doesnt hold well, one metal needs to be softer so it gets a bite, and not just a clamping action....then of course the mount that attaches to weaver rail will need to have aluminum clamp jaws, unless weaver rail is aluminum, then clamps on mount will need to be steel. good luck with finding a working setup.
-Mike.

about 1/4 inch higher than the factory rear sight.

gonna redo links/prices shown, as they have changed a lil.
After many trials and errors, it seems I am once again having to make ANOTHER scout scoping thread. So here goes: Scout-Scoping the Mosin-Nagant M91, M91/30 and M91/59.
1) Remove rear sight base (gunsmith removed it): $30
2) Leapers Accushot 3/8" dovetail mount: $15 Leapers Medium Profile Airgun/.22 Full Length Integral Mount- Mid-Profile RGPM2PA-25M2 DISCOUNT
(Leapers Accushot 3/8" dovetail mount, offset): $13 Leapers Airgun/.22 1" Bi-directional Offset Optimum Profile Mount RGPMOFS38-25H4 DISCOUNT
3) NcStar (New Century) 2-7x zoom, 32mm objective lens, 7-layer Illuminated Reticle, etc. $55/included s/h from NcSTAR Illuminated Pistol & Long Eye Relief Scope - 2-7x32e Black Scope / Blue / Ring SEPB2732B w/ FREE UPS Riflescope Rifle scope 2-7x32mm
Leapers mount model number: RGPM2PA-25M2 (Black)
Leapers offset mount model number: RGPMOFS38-25H4 (Black)
NcStar scope model number: SEPB2732B (Black)
Bipods: Wicks Trading Post,Optics, Shooting and Hunting Supplies (bipod is optional of course, just for anyone that needs/wants one, it helps with weight)
Now, for fitting:
The rings that come with scope are for weaver style(1inch) rails, but they have something helpful.
The inside of rings have a soft layer of "shim" to keep scope from getting scuffed by rings on mount.
If you remove the layer of shim from the included rings and apply it to the rings of mount, you will have higher success of protecting your scope tube from abrasions caused by scrubbing against rings during mounting/adjusting procedure. It will also allow you to rotate scope a lil to fine tune the horizontal-vertical wires without scratching scope tube.
Mount everything as per instructions.
Make sure not to overtighten screws in rings, I tend to hold them by short end of allen wrench and turn till u cant turn anymore, then switch to long end and tighten another 1/8th of a turn. Remember to always tighten them in rotation to prevent warp. If you tighten till it squeaks, it’ll deform the threads and reduce the lifetime of the rings; it can also warp the scope tube if tightened too far, thus making adjustments impossible and permanently ruining scope.
These are examples of what it should look like upon completion:
First picture, the person used the long mount, which can be too tight of a fit, the links above are for the correct length mounts.
This second pic is of the offset model, it can be placed with either offset towards chamber, or towards muzzle. Mounting it towards chamber is probably easier on the eyes tho.
Good Luck to anyone who decides to go this route.

hey, anyone happen to know what company manufactured the US-M35? IO,Inc has a few for sale for $4k, and was wondering if you think that is a good price....it says they've been serviced and have new batteries. May grab one to use for trips to the range....considering I now have a 4k watt sound system taking up my inside space in my ext-cab GMC....I'd have PLENTY of room for hauling my rifles

I decided to scout scope my Mosin as per this thread...
Initial review...
Total time of removing the rear and front sites and installing the scope took less than an hour. It really is a simple process. I also took the chance to clean up under the rear sight and "de-rusted" and reblued the rail. In the picture it looks like I have some more work to do there but I cannot see it with the naked eye
On the range...
Before heading out I bore sighted in the house at about 30'. This was good enough to get on paper at the 50yd range for some rough adjustments. Moved over to the 100yd and dialed in.
Overall the NcStar sight seems pretty good. Target is clear, is easy to sight in and does not suffer from noticeable distortion on the highest power setting. 7x is not quite enough to see the holes on a standard black target on a consistent basis. The long eye relief takes some getting used to but is certainly a workable sight system. The fault is the illuminated reticle as it seems to throw off the zero somehow, further testing is required to determine if this is true or just a fluke. Not an issue for me, but I guess it is kind of fun to use once in a while.
The scope mount is sturdy, and did not move even though 80 rounds went down range.
With this scope I shot my best group ever - 3/4" at 100yds. However, this was a fluke as most 3 shot groups were 2-3". Much of this is due to the craptastic trigger on the Mosin imho and not the bore.
The one noticeable issue I ran into was the huge change in POI as the barrel heated up.
I finished sighting in while hot, and then set the rifle down to "cool" for 10 minutes or so (it was 102 that day!). I loaded up a full magazine and started shooting. The first shot was 6" high, the next about 4-5", then 3-4" and then down into the bull. I repeated this process 3 times and each time, the "cold" gun needed 3 shots or so to get back into the "hot zero". Anyone else run into this or am I just nutz??? Not an issue at the range, but something to work on prior to hunting.
Overall a fun project, huge improvement on standard Mosin sights and good for the range. Thanks for this thread!

Barrel looks suspiciously brown under the mount. Is it a trick of the light......or rust?

I'm assuming it is rust even though I cannot see it in daylight. The flash is bright so it will bring out things I can't see. Or it is an artifact of the photo. Not sure.

my mosins all shoot different hot. i let it cool between shot when on the bench. i zeroed mine cold, cause if i ever do get around to hunting with them, i won't be able to warm them up first.
glad you like that mount. i love it on my 91/30!

Those are some good scope mounts to use if the rear sight is removed. 91/30s made on or around 1940 and later, expect rear sight removal to be 2 pins and no solder. Before 1940, there may be solder and a set screw to remove. If no scope mount is desired, high rise .22 rings will do the trick. The dove tail groove is narrow.
