using ler scopes can be a bit tricky to get a good, consistent sight picture. after a some practice i seem to have got it down. i noticed a friend who was bowwoing a 91/30 the other night was hitting the target about 5" right of me and wasn't grouping as well. we're gonna work on him to get more consistent. it's been so long since i shot my m44 with the regular scope on it, i'm not sure if it's really the ler scope that's the problem or just being consistent with the cheek weld with either scope.
which mounts were/are you using? exact descriptions/part numbers would be helpful.
did you use the offset leapers mount? if so, which way did you offset it? if you set the offset facing forward that might be why you need to come off the stock to get a good picture. to the rear you should be able to keep your cheek on the comb and get a good picture.

Dunno the real part numbers. I'm left handed and have the air rifle mounts which put the scope about as low as it can get. I've got the scope as far back as it will go, but one of the limits to using these air rifle mounts is that you can't get the scope back as far as you could with a mount which attached to the existing box the holds the rear sight. I probably have an inch or more of clearance between the rear of the scope and the rear of the receiver, if that's the term I want.
I noticed that as I shot more, getting my eye directly behind the scope got easier so this may just be a matter of practice.
By the way, the load that worked out for me was 55gr of H4831sc using recycled Privi brass and CCI primers with the 180gr Hornady rn/sp bullet. That doesn't really meter as well as the ball powders and I'm going to have to get a dribbler and start loading by weight rather then volume. The short cut was a good idea, but I still found variation using my Lee Perfect (not) Powder Mesure.

oh. o.k. i thought you were using one of the mounts this thread was started for in the first place. if you'd like to get it lower and farther back, the offset leapers mount is the one to go for. http://www.opticsplanet.net/leapers-...fs38-25h4.html

nah, I figured there were enough random threads on scout scopes so rather then start a new one I'd just piggyback this one. Didn't mean to confuse anyone.

My 91/59 shoots to well to scope it. The sights are right on the money, now that I took the brass punch to them.

I received my Leapers offset mount a couple weeks ago, and I have to say that it's pretty impressive for $15!!! Haven't tried it yet though.

i've had great luck with the ones on my rifles! hoping you do as well!
p.s. forget about using any loctite.

AFA the mount, I'm not even going to really set it all up until I get seated at the shooting bench and I can adjust everything the way I need it. I had my 91/30 all apart for refinishing the stock, but just never got around to it, so I put it all back together. Except for the bolt, it's all apart and I've got to figure out how to reassemble it. I have the instructions from Surplusrifle.com, so I'm good.

| Pictures of the Leapers scope mount on my M91/30
This thread was very helpful, thanks to Mike82 for the information. I used the full lenght Leapers mount on my M91/30. I wanted the scope to be mounted as low as possible so I could get a better cheek weld. I started with the NcSTAR mount that attaches to the rear sight, but it wasn't very stable and seemed to high. It resulted in more of chin, rather than a cheek weld. I saw this thread and decided to give the Leapers mount a try. It took about 2 minutes to remove the rear sight. I just removed the two pins and a little persuasion with a brass drift punch and the sight came right off. I used a carbide rotary rasp to remove material from the bottom of the mount to clear the barrel. I removed enough of the mount to allow the front of the mount to sit flush with forward end of the rear sight dovetail.
If the weather holds out, I hope to try it out tomorrow.
Thanks again... |

Great job. In your pic you can see the forward pinhole. I suggest removing just enough material to put the pin back in. This will prevent your mount from moving from recoil. It may stay secure for 30 or so rounds, but without the pin it will move eventually.

| Thanks, why didn't I think of that
I didn't occur to me to use the pin to secure the mount, I will try that. The mount comes with a set screw that comes down from the top. I considered marking that point and using a drill to create a spot for the set screw to bite into, but I like your idea much better. I didn't like the open pin holes anyway. Great idea, thanks, Tim.

I could be wrong here, but after reading this thread several times I can't seem to find a mention of how this mount holds up to the recoil of the mosin.
How well does this mount hold zero?
How will this mount compare to the S&K mount in terms of holding zero?

they work just fine. that's why we're telling people they're the cheapest and best long eye relief mount to use. (if you remove the rear sight base. darrells is the best if you don't remove the sight base.)
