Post Updated Info for Scout-Scoping an M91, M91/30 and M91/59.

After many trials and errors, it seems I am once again having to make ANOTHER scout scoping thread. So here goes:
Scout-Scoping the Mosin-Nagant M91/30 and M91/59.
1) Remove rear sight base (gunsmith removed it): $30
2) Leapers Accushot 3/8" dovetail mount: $15
Leapers Medium Profile Airgun/.22 Full Length Integral Mount- Mid-Profile RGPM2PA-25M2 DISCOUNT
3) NcStar (New Century) 2-7x zoom, 32mm objective lens, 7-layer Illuminated Reticle, etc. $63/included s/h from OpticsPlanet - SEPB2732B search phrase
Leapers mount model number: LP-MT-RGPM2PA-25M2 (Black)
NcStar scope model number: SEPB2732B (Black)
Bipods: Wicks Trading Post,Optics, Shooting and Hunting Supplies
Now, for fitting:
The rings that come with scope are for weaver style(1inch) rails, but they have something helpful.
The inside of rings have a soft layer of "shim" to keep scope from getting scuffed by rings on mount.
If you remove the layer of shim from the included rings and apply it to the rings of mount, you will have higher success of protecting your scope tube from abrasions caused by scrubbing against rings during mounting/adjusting procedure. It will also allow you to rotate scope a lil to fine tune the horizontal-vertical wires without scratching scope tube.
Mount everything as per instructions.
Make sure not to overtighten screws in rings, I tend to hold them by short end of allen wrench and turn till u cant turn anymore, then switch to long end and tighten another 1/8th of a turn. Remember to always tighten them in rotation to prevent warp. If you tighten till it squeaks, it’ll deform the threads and reduce the lifetime of the rings; it can also warp the scope tube if tightened too far, thus making adjustments impossible and permanently ruining scope.
These are examples of what it should look like upon completion:
First picture, the person used the long mount, which can be too tight of a fit, the links above are for the correct length mounts.

This second pic is of the offset model, it can be placed with either offset towards chamber, or towards muzzle. Mounting it towards chamber is probably easier on the eyes tho.

Good Luck to anyone who decides to go this route.

well that's good to hear....but remember, this route only works on M91, M91/30, and M91/59....no others unless they have full length site bases, then i'm not 100% sure the hidden dovetail exists on them. It should, but not 100%.

Great post Mike !!
Won't be on the carbines M44 and M38. Only long rifles, and models cut down from long rifles.

Mike, The part number you give RGWM2PA-25M2 will fit a 3/8 dovetail? Reason I am asking is I ordered a RGWM2PA-25M4 thinking it would fit with some trimming. Turns out its a weaver base mount so it wont fit a 3/8 .22 mount. Optics planet lists it as a .22 mount. Package says weaver. Like the looks of your setup. Just want to be sure. Glen

Leapers Weaver Style 1” Compact Integral Medium Profile, See-Thru Mount, For Scopes Up to 50mm Obj., 4 Top Screws RGWM2PA-25M4 DISCOUNT
this is what you ordered, and it's what they sent. notice it says weaver in the title. you should be more careful next time when looking and make sure you don't click and order wrong item....they only have 2 mounts at opticsplanet that will fit the mosin.

Leapers Airgun/.22 1" Bi-directional Offset Optimum Profile Mount RGPMOFS38-25H4 DISCOUNT
Leapers Medium Profile Airgun/.22 Full Length Integral Mount- Mid-Profile RGPM2PA-25M2 DISCOUNT
^those are only ones that will fit correctly^
if you notice the first pic, it shows him using a 100mm long base; that base is too long as you can see it presses against both the curve of receiver(front of chamber) and the handguard. The 2 I listed that will fit, have the shorter bases, the offset has a 62mm long base, while the standard one has the 75mm long base. They also have another convenience, the locking plates are reversible so if it's not exact fit, flip the plate around and the other edge of plate is slightly different in thickness, so it will either fit more snug, or less snug than previous side. Good Luck with your project.
-Mike.

seeing as the rifle on top is my brothers and the rifle on the bottom is mine, i think it's a great write-up of cheap, solid, scopemounts!

How come the Leapers mount you linked to doesn't look like either of the mounts shown in post 1? I'd hate to order the wrong one.

Cool

So Mike, you used an airgun scopemount? How well does it handle the recoil? I like the idea of the LER style scope. looks good.

Yeah, it has to be an "airgun or .22" mount, because the dovetail on the Mosin barrel is roughly 3/8" wide, about the same as an airgun or .22 scope mount dovetail. Lots smaller than the typical Weaver mount.

I used one of the cheap leaf mounts and ended up drilling and tapping the front of it to hold a larger screw that i then embedded in the barrell spring. Yes, I have to remove the scope to disassembly the rifle. Doesn't bug me.

Rondog, the original post has the link for the straight mount with a 75mm base....the first pic is identical to the linked mount, except the one in 1st pic is a 100mm long base, too long to fit correctly....the 2nd pic is of the offset mount.
