Exclamation My Challenge...

Ladies and gentlemen, I have a challenge for all of you. This weekend I will be going to a gun show in Valley Forge PA (Oh, how I hate you for making me travel out of state, NJ...) and I have decided that at said gunshow I must purchase my first milsurp.

Buttt, the dreaded question... Mauser or Mosin?

It is up to you fine people, to determine what I will buy! I am posting this thread in both the mosin nagant and mauser forums and it is your job to tell me which one (and specific model) to get and then tell me why! Hopefully, I will come home less than a week from now with a "brand new" rifle, of which i will of course post the necessary pictures in the thread of the winning team.

Now mauser and mosin people alike... FIGHT!
My purchasing decisions depend on it.
(I am expecting and looking for biased answers, so dont let me down!)

Thank You!

Let's start this tag-team cage match.

Highlander, I'd suggest you buy a Mosin Nagant Model 91/30 as your first military surplus rifle. Preferably, a hex-receiver 91/30.

As to the whys:

1. A true Mauser 98K with waffenamt marks starts at $260 wholesale, $495 retail.

2. Czech-made VZ-24s based on the Mauser 98 action start at $140 wholesale, $280 retail.

3. Yugoslav-made M24/47s based on the Mauser 98 action start at $160 wholesale, $280 retail.

4. A Mosin Nagant 91/30 with a hex receiver starts at $80 wholesale, $289 retail.

5. When you buy a Mosin, you usually get a bayonet, an ammo pouch, a cleaning kit and a sling at no additional cost. When you buy a Mauser, you get some packaging material at no additional cost... if you're lucky.

6. 8mm Mauser ammo goes for $225 for a 900 round case. 7.62x54R Bulgarian Mosin Nagant ammo goes for $143 per 880 round case.

7. You can detail-strip a Mosin Nagant using nothing but your bayonet, if you have to. You need a cleaning kit to disassemble a Mauser, and heaven help you if you have a stock without the attached tool needed to strip down the bolt.

8. The Mosin Nagant has the easiest to disassemble bolt ever made for a military rifle.

9. The many variants of the Mosin Nagant are a helluva lot more affordable than are the Mausers. And you can actually tell one from another without a magnifying glass.

10. The Mosin Nagant is still in service in Iraq and Afghanistan. The Mauser 98K is out of service everywhere.

Okay, someone tag me and throw a body-slam on the Mauser shooters!

Mosins a dime a dozen and years latter still worth a dime

The Mausers K-98 around now =most are RC which is fine if bore is good and such and stamps not defaced.

Well it really up to your wallet and what one is facing down the road $$$$

The mauser will sell better than the mosin if one needed the $$$

I have both to some degree--

I like em both

get the one that speaks to you

All I can say is that for the price of one Mauser, you can get 3 Mosin Nagants. But do something real cool, and get one of EACH!

+1 Gandog. If you can afford it, do both! Cyrano has a good price scale for all the different Mausers. But the only Mauser I ever really wanted was a K98. My first Mauser was a Turk Mauser, but was happy to find a RC K98 for $230, perfect bore, all marks in tact, bolt not matching. I'd say a decent RC Mauser ought to be $250-$300 with good bore, and not a crappy stock. But there are cheaper Mauser models, the Czech and Yugos. Both are great guns. Millwright brings up a good point too. The Mauser will probably resell better than the Mosin. But, you can get two Mosins for the price of one Mauser. Ammo isn't too bad either really for both guns. Either way you won't be sorry about your purchase(s). Good luck, and be sure to tell us what you end up getting.

you need 1 K98 mauser, and 1 91/30 mosin. for a shooter barrel condition is what you want to look at first.

Or I could have said what Lefty said, and it would have been a perfect option!
