Okay. This lot's history. Does anyone know where else I might be able to buy a 91/59 for about what Allan's Armory was asking for them? It's the only model I still need for my type collection and they never show up at gun stores here.
So, is the only difference in the M-38 and the 91/59 the sights? It appears the 91/59 has the full length rifle sights and the M-38 has the carbine sights, correct?
That is correct, aside from a 91/59 carbine being a cut down 91/30 rifle. With the sights from a cut down 91/30 rifle there is still an option for a scope set up that is more solid than the cheap eBay mounts for $10 that suck. You can remove the rear sight, and install some high rise .22 scope rings. They need to be .22 high rise for 2 reasons. The first is clearance so the scope will fit on the dovetail grooves revealed beneath the rear sight. Second is the dovetail groove is too narrow for standard sized rifle rings.
I am not sure if there are any stock differences or not. The handguard is slightly shorter on the 91/59 to accommodate the longer rear sight, and the front sight base differs slightly from an M38. There are also M91/38 rifles, and those are few and far between. They have imperial markings and dates on the receiver instead of Communist markings and date eras. HTH

anyone notice how the war-time receivers will not fit pre-war stocks because the receiver is wider above the trigger area? i just did some swapping around to see what a 91/30 would look like in a 91/59 stock.....it looks interesting, but the 91/59 receiver wouldn't even get within a half inch of sitting in the pre-war 91/30 stock. 1933 91/30 and 1943 91/59. I had never noticed that difference in them.

The earlier recievers have tang steps. Izhevsk phased them out in 1941, a year or so later at Tula.
