Deer Hunting

I'm going deer hunting for the first time and I wanted to use my Nadia. My question is what is the ideal bullet weight for a Whitetail? Season opens Saturday so I need to hurry up and get some SPs.

if you think you may be hitting a big-boned deer, go big with the 203gr SPs

You don't say which model Mosin you're using, or what type terrain your hunting. So I would go with something in the 160-180 grain arena.

Not sure of your location, but the Winchester 180gr SP may be the easiest to acquire locally. Now if you are used to shooting the 147 milsurp stuff, a trip to the range is necessary, or you will end up doing this.

Wait for it... wait for it......

I use the 203gr brown bear SP...because that's all I've found locally that isn't FMJ...on the bright side, my rifle really likes them!

Of course the deer isn't much better. Just resumed eating after the first shot missed?

150 grain is plenty for deer, now if ya after black bear 180 or 200+ and the latter if ya after moose. The lighter weights are hard to find in retail hunting ammo so I reload, can't wait to see what a 125gr clockin' 3k fps will do to a coyote.

Go to youtube and look at the info in the sidebar. His son dropped the rifle a week before the hunt. He got the deer with another rifle later.

I'm hardly an expert. I figured I practice with 147 gr., so I'd shoot with the closest weight to that. Use 150 gr Privi Partisan sp.

Worked fine.

MY GOD! That poor bunny didn't stand a chance!
OHHH...THE HUMANITY!!

Back on topic, I think location of the hunt would figure into this. For example, in Florida, the deer aren't all that gi-normic as compared to the further north and west varieties. 150 gr. Prvi Partisan SP should be plenty for Florida and the Southeast in general, I imagine.
This reminds me I need to get some Prvi Partisan. Been busy stocking up on shotgun fodder lately.

Oh, and thanks for that video. Kinda reminiscent of the jihad-fail videos over on Live Leak.

Well I don't know about his son, but I always checked my rifle's zero the day before.

You've probably heard the one about the AR shooter, the AK shooter and the Mosin shooter talking about hunting squirrels.

"I shot a squirrel with my AR-15. I'm having roast squirrel for dinner!"

"I shot a squirrel with my AK-47. I'm having squirrel stew."

"I shot a squirrel with my Mosin Nagant. I think the tail's around here somewheres..."

I used the Winchester 180gr SPs in my M44 to take a black bear at close to 50yds. The bear stood no chance. I think the 203gr would be more than overkill unless you plan on shooting the deer hiding behind the old oak....
