Sometimes if you call places like ClassicArms.com or Gunsnammo.com and ask them if they have stuff that they have not posted they will and will sell it to you on the spot. I got a stripped barreled receivcer from Pat Burns (gunsnammo.com) for $45 by doing that.

For a receiver only, try GB, I see them on there occasionally. More common to find barreled actions.
There's a LGS (buymilsurp.com)not far from me that I stopped in last week for a Mosin bolt. I may break down and go back there next week to pick up a nice K-31 he has. I'll check to see if he has any stripped receivers.

Hey Mosinites, is there anything in particular to look for in a receiver besides the usual, good fit, bent handle, etc? Or do different models have better/worse receiver qualities?

I may try that and I'll check GB, but there's a gunshow here at the end of the month. I'm gonna poke around there. I'll probably see a busted up Mosin that someones tired of lugging to shows.

It didn't occur to me that C&R status came into play. I was planning on shipping to FFLs from the beginning. So. . .

This only matters it you have a C&R license, if you dont it pretty much doesnt matter since you would have to go through an FFL dealer anyways.

Shameless bump. I just don't want to lest this thread die. I'm DREAMING about building a rifle like this. I think about it all the time. I'll have one before too much longer. . . I hope. . .

Classic Arms has the barrels together with a receiver as a package.

The price sure is right, but I'm sticking with the more traditional "sporterizations" using shortened and re-crowned barrels.

The UK59 is a cool project, but lacking a lathe- and the desire to have to fabricate a stock from scratch to accommodate the bull barrel, it crosses the "financial" sense line for me...having to get a smith involved to do all the machining...

You've been thinking about this too long already man...just do it!

Yeah, but they sell JUST the reciever, leaving me to buy all the moving parts. It'd be a lot cheaper to buy a barreled action and try to get the barrel off.

Just like to thank this thread gave me the idea and courage to start my monster mosin project.

The project started October, 2011 and completed in November. Here are some pictures:

The stock has pillar bedding. The scope mount was modified from a steel Remington 700 base.

After tested at 50 yard and modified the trigger using Huber Concepts' idea. Finally tested it last Thursday at 100 yard. The result is far beyond my expectation. It shot some 3-shoot groups under 1" with military surplus. With handload, it is a sub-0.5MOA rifle. I will post my range report with some target pictures later.

Next group is Soviet 1977 surplus. Most of them failed to fire, turns out I cut the fir pin spring too short. But when they fired, here the group:
