The only difference is that the receiver stud and bolt are metric, not english. Be careful when installing aftermarket stocks that you don't try to force an english bolt...an armorer client of mine made this mistake.

Fortunately, I was able to drill and retap the bolt, so now he has the only Mav w/ an English reciever stud. Whew! Close call!

Mossberg buys these grips directly from us. If you don't know of a dealer who can provide one OR need questions answered, call me at my desk or email me!

Best,

Any feedback about my previous post?
Is that because the bore is not crome plated?

Hello,

Few days ago, I've purchased a Maverick 88 Security Shotgun.

Before firing, I've cleaned the barrel and noticed that there was 5 little stripes inside the barel, juste after the cartridge chamber.
It's like a slug was fired and slightly damaged the inside of the barel.
Does it normal for a new shotgun?

Are there actually groves in the barrel ? if it's smooth .... i wouldn't worry about it

imo,,,John

As promised. This is the Mossberg 500A police edition, but very similar to the Maverick 88.

It looks like you are balancing your gun, nice... I just bought a 500a 20 inch 8 shot , I put the pistol grip on, love it... I've shot a lot of shotguns , i never figured a 20 inch cylinder bore (not choked )barrel would hold a somewhat tight pattern.
Where is the safty on the mav 88. I'm thinking about getting one,I have enough hand guns and rifles.
One more question... Are there any weak places on the aluminum recievers?

Thanks , John

It's rubbed off a little bit of lead from the slug. Won't hurt a thing. You'll see similar streaks from buckshot.

Oh, I see, I misunderstood, I thought you were reporting this AFTER firing. nevertheless, the gun was proof fired at the factory and I expect that's what left the marks.

I have a few faint lines that almost appear as rifling but its not i think its normal on all of em. When i lived in alaska i had an ex cop friends who is a gun nut lol and he said it was normal on mine. Im assuming you are talking about the same kind of lines.

Good gun and fun to shoot. I had mine for about 7 months now and love it. Ya I had the same lines you all are talking about in the barrel when I first bought it but I hear its just from the factory.

Mine has never failed me I have a 24 inch ported barrel with Gobble dots on the rib and a mod screw in choke tube for night hunting coyote's and other varmints #4 buck does the trick out to about 40 yards copper or nickel plated.

I recently purchased a Maverick 88 as well, and I would have to agree that for the price and all of the mods, its a great deal, however I am unsure if it is able to fire steel shot out of the 28" barrel with a Mod Choke, if so it could be a good hunting/home defense shotty

Question Hello

Well I have the maverick with the 28' barrel. It has some sort of choke tube screwed in the end. is it ok to shoot with it out, and can I fire slugs out of it? Sorry but I really don't know much about guns... Knive and swords are what I am most proficient with, for now...

hi guys I actually just bought a Maverick 88 (18") and some accessories at a gun show. Mine came with a standard buttstock as well as an installed pistol grip.

I've never owned a shotgun before (nor shot one, only a .357 SIG and some black powder) and I'm wondering if I should even attempt to fire it with a pistol grip.

It won't kick that bad, you'll be alright.

I would not shoot it w/o the choke installed . Then are somewhere around $ 15 - 20 , standard Mossburg tubes are said to work . Just get a cylinder tube for slugs .

Academy did sell them .

God bless

Sweet. the one in it now is smooth and doesn't seem like it does anything except protect the threads... I hope I get to shoot it soon.

I bought one from gunbroker for $99 bucks. It's a 28 inch barrel with the accu choke tube in it. Took it hog hunting and got a little one (35lbs). The kick on it made my savage 30-06 seem like nothing! It's my first shotgun but probably not my last.

Question

Did Mossberg stop making the Maverick 88 ???

I just visited their website and there is no listing of the Maverick 88. I also went to Academy's website and they don't have it listed for sale anymore. Yet I know they did list it about 2 weeks ago for $180.

The only "home defense" shotguns I see are the "special purpose" series like the 500 and 590 but they start at $400 !!!

My wife was really wanting the Maverick 88 or something similar in the same price range.

Thanks for the advice.

Poking around Academy's website I found a Mossberg Maverick with a choice of 12 gauge / 28" barrel or 20 gauge 26" barrel for $157 And it's made in TEXAS.

I guess I could buy that and cut 10" off the barrel.
