Maverick 88's are better than Mossberg 500's IF you are putting a pistol grip on it. The tang safety on 500's make it really difficult to reach with pistol grips, while the trigger guard safety on the 88 is in a perfect position.
As stated before just about all Mossberg and Maverick parts interchange, including funiture, barrels, action assemblies, mag tubes, and bolts. About the only parts you run into problems with are with the safeties, otherwise it's the same gun only one is made a little cheaper in Mexico.

Although it helps to be bilingual if you call to order accessories. And you need to order the forend tube/action bar assembly in order to install a forend that is made for the Mossberg 500.
No offense intended, and it's nice to see someone else from Arkansas on here and you're dead-on about the pistol grip/folding stock issue.

Hi there, I'm also from Arkansas. Where can I buy a Maverick Security 88? Academy is only showing the field model and impactguns.com is a little high on prices(lower then off the maverick website but higher than academy)

lazyman I bought my Maverick 88 Security with 18.5" barrel from Acadamy Sports.
Call them and see if there in stock. if not have them order you one.
Where do you live in Arkansas ? I live in El Dorado. I bought mine in Monroe, La. while on a business trip. Our meeting was next to a Acadamy sports.
Mine was $189.99 when I bought it recently I have seen they have gone up to around $239.00. some places.
I was looking Friday at a dealers only site and dealer cost is $159.00 so if you can find a store that has one may be you can haggle the price down some.
I'm ordering one for a friend...A.H

Hey A.H., I live in Jonesboro. I'll give them a call and see. After I heard about these shotguns i've been on the hunt for the past week getting personal reviews. If I do get one I want to get the stuff to make it a burglars nightmare . This could turn out to be an expensive hobby . Also can anybody get a hold of a wood stock for a 1927 Super Dreadnaught 12 gauge, mine kinda had a run in with a cinder block after I tripped on a rock and busted it .

well they've got a security 88 model at academy for $180 but, the nearest one is 2 1/2 hours away. United Pawn Brokers can order me one for $220 which is here in town.

Hey all, just got my first shotgun yesterday at academy for $159, its the maverick88 with a 28inch non-ported ventilated rib barrel and an interchangeable Accu-Choke™ tube system with one "Modified" tube. ( I really have no idea what that all means) I plan to skeet shoot a bit but its really for home defense. Without doing changing the chokes, will it shoot any kind of shells including slugs?? I also think I will be getting a shorter barrel when its in my house, anyone know some cheap places to find one??
thanks a bunch

thanks a bunch | Do a google search for Mosberg 500 barrels .
I am not a shotgun expert , but you may want to use a cylinder Accu-Choke for slugs ( no choke at all ?
God bless

thanks a bunch | I did the same thing. I love my Mav 88 and it's great for trap shooting.
Cabellas has an 18 1/2" barrel for $91. Get some 00 buck 3" magnum shells (or 2 3/4" shells if the little lady will be using it) and you have the perfect setup for Home defense.
Make sure you have the 5 shell version. I believer there is a version out there that has an 8 shell capacity, that barrel will not work on the 5 shell version.

Like some one said before, you can interchange almost any thing from a 500. I ordered a rifled 24 inch slug barrel for a 500 and it went right onto my 88. I may also be getting another 28 inch barrel (Last one I had I had cut down to 20 inches for bear/home defence gun to shoot both shot and slugs out of for close range) for bird hunting. Untill just recently I didnt think I would ever use it for birds now Im thinking I need another 28 incher lol.
And Jeffcneal, they are made in a diffrent plant but that doesnt meen the parts arnt interchangable. If your going to buy a replacement tube or for arm you might as well buy one for a 500. If you get a 500 for arm you can then buy any aftermarket stock kit and use the after market for arm grips for a 500 on a a 88. The biggest thing right now is that the aftermarket for arm grips for a 500 wont work on a 88 because the 88 has a molded for arm unlike a 500. I believe the only part that is not interchangable would be the trigger and guard assembly.

The 500's trigger will work but if you do so, you lose the crossbolt safety since the 500's safety is on the tang. Although I have never tried it (because the 88's trigger is so lousy), I suppose it would work in the 500 but then you would have two safeties.
