Scope Question

I recently purchased a ATR 100 in 270 cal. It was brand new and came with a "bore-sighted" Busnell Sportsman 3x9x40. My question is, if I am going to be hunting Whitetails should I keep this scope or get another. I have no experience with Bushnell.

They are pretty good in my opinion. I have one on a mauser .308 and have used it for years with no complaints.

At least take it to a range and try it out and see if it works alright and if you like it or not.

Congrats on your new rifle. Very nice rifle and excellent caliber, in my opinion. Many enthusiasts say a serious hunter should spend as much as possible on "good glass" or even that one should spend as much on it...as on the rifle. Somewhere in between there is likely a good compromise between a "package" scope and a "several hunderd dollar" one. I'd suggest using what came with your rifle for a while, and if you like the rifle, you might want to upgrade a bit to a known quality brand scope. Actually Bushnell does make some excellent quality scopes in their "Elite" line and other names such as Nikon (Prostaff) and Weaver(Classic V series) are quality scopes that can be depended on for years and can be found at pretty good prices. Here's a link to a retailer with a closeout special on what is a good deal on a VERY good scope. I own 2 of the Busnell badged 3200 3-9x40s and they are a tremendous value. I concur with the above. Bushnell makes a decent scope for the money and some of their scopes are on par with Leupold and Nikons. The sportsman label is their economy model but is still an OK scope for what you are doing. Use the scope. See how it performs.

Each time I'm near one of the ATRs I give'r a look, while my wife is present, in hopes one will follow us home some day...

My son has a Savage "package" gun in .270 and the Bushnell (Banner?) scope shot the reticle loose in the first season he used it.

I have not been out yat to shoot the ATR. I will let you know how it turns out. My first good scope was a Redfield LoPro and I have been in love with them ever since. I sold my the rifle I had the scope on with the scope and bought a M17 Winchester that had been sporterized, had a floating barrell and a Weaver 4X of the El Paso variety. That was a tack driver with it's 26" barrel but had to sell it after a divorce. I will try the Bushnell but I have been longing for a good used Redfield on Ebay. Any Redfield fans out there?

Make note "BORE SIGHTED" does not mean it's rerady to go hunting. You must take it to the range and finish sighting it in. some times they are close some time NOT...--JMJ--

I have had good luck with the bush. scopes, finish sighting in your gun and use the scope on it, if it fails somewhere down the road then replace it. Any scope can fail after time but for the most part scopes are well made these days. If you do replace it sometime I like Burris scopes I am replacing mine with them if I get a bad one, some of my scopes are as old as I am and my parts are failing too.

I have been out to the range and shot a box of Federal Power-Shok 130gr. Wind was blowing around 20 mph but the ATR 100 grouped nicely at 120 yards, about 1.5 - 2 inches. I am very happy with the rifle. However, the Bushnell Sportsman was not even close to being bore sighted. Finally adjusted it on zero, but noticed that the rings were so low that the adjustment ring on the scope was against the base and could not be moved. So until I get new rings I am shooting a 3x40 scope. Not a big deal. For my first 270 win rifle I this this is a good one, especially considering the price.

My sons Savage had the same problem. According to him, the Bushnell on his was a Sportsview. He replaced it with a Nikon Prostaff.

I have several Bushnells, and have never had a problem. One fixed 4x has been on about six rifles over the past 40 or so years, including a .300 win mag. It is still fully functional, if a little worn in the finish.

My shoulder still has a nice bruise on it. I noticed that the ATR kicked a bit but didn't think much of it. A couple days later a bruise started to form. Guess I need to replace the recoil pad too.

Thanks Mike for the report. So your saying the ATR is a keeper and would recommend it . I wish they would come out with a .358 Win in the ATR's I'd get one !

Nice Rifle, go sight the scope in, on a range with 100yd to 300yd targets. check and make sure that the scopes turrent is accurate.

So until I get new rings I am shooting a 3x40 scope. Not a big deal. For my first 270 win rifle I this this is a good one, especially considering the price.
