Howdy,

Came across a 500 today, in great shape. What do you feel a fair price for a 500, that has supposedly only had 3 boxes of shells through it? Wood in great condition, flawless bluing, no evident wear on the blueing etc??

What are your basic opinions of Mossberg too? I have always heard them to be the KMart of Shotguns.........

I have two 500a's. One is a riot gun, black composite stock, the other is a hunting gun with nice wood stock and ventilated rib barrel. Both are good guns.

they're good for what they are and many accessories are available. but their not my cup of tea. prefer steel over aluminum any day.

I have had my moss 500 for years -- used to hunt a lot with it. I got tired of that and turned it into a riot gun, pistol grips on both ends, heat shield, 5 round holder on receiver and a 18 1/2 inch barrel.

Many departments are issued 500's. Good guns for sure. I have fired many of them and always been satisfied as I can be with them.

I'm an 870 fan my self, but find no problem with the mossy's. My son has a 20 ga. bantam, nice gun. As far as price, in good condition it should be able to be had for at least 15% ~ 20% less than new. This is easy to explain to someome on a private sale. However the gun shop needs to make a buck.

You shouldn't pay much, Dicks has them new for $249.98 for the12GA. combo, $199.98 for the regular without the extra barrel, both wood.

I paid $140 for a well used but fine condition poly-choked model two years ago. I think I got a good price. I've seen refurbished Maverick 88s for $160. I'd never pay over $200 in a million years since you might as well get a new one for that price.

Where does Mossberg use aluminum in the guns?

The reciever is aluminum. Trigger guard is a high strenght polymer of some sort. Nothing wrong with this. There are a lot of high dollar guns that do so (aluminum reciever), Bennelli etc. etc.
I don't dislike them, they are good for weight especially for field use. I like the all steel heft of the 870. I don't lug it around, just sits in the corner of the duck blind waiting to belch steel.

I like the light weight of the aluminum. Never found it to be insubstantial. All of the plastic used is in the manually operated mechanisms, nothing that involves the results of firing, like the frame on a pistol.

There are metal trigger guards for mod 500's if you have to have them.
I have never had a mod 500 fail in any way. never seen or heard of one that did.

Bought mine used(slighty)22 years ago. It's so old I has a walnut stock(1979 Country Squire model). The only thing I ever broke was the weld between the action bars and the forend support tube, I was shooting slugs off a benchrest at the time. Took it home and brazed it back together and killed a NY deer 3 days later. I now have 3 stocks, 5 barrels and 4 different sighting systems for it. This comming weekend I'm taking it to a sporting clays shoot for pumpguns and leaving the Brng O/U's at home. Not counting all the extras I bought I've had a lot of fun with this old friend for $100. When I still deer hunted with it, I used to shoot skeet with the scope on it to get ready for the season, great fun!

Mine is 2 yrs old and has more than 2K rnds fired.
No malfunction of any kind.
Lots of accesories and lots of configurations.
I love my 590.
I like better the ergonomics of the moss over the 870 and 1200, 1300, but that's my opinion.
Either way you can't loose with one of these.
