I prefer the Mossberg, but in 535 or 835 (gotta have those 31/2" Mags LOL) I prefer the safety position and bolt release lever position of the Mossbergs. OTOH I would buy a 870 or 1300 if the deal was right.

in our duck blind oddly enough there is usually a 50/50 split between 870s and 500s.none have ever demonstrated reliability issues, and conditions can be harsh.i recently bought a 1300 to try this season, still deciding on a choke tube. fwiw, the 500 is easier to tear down to clean imo. |

We've had a few 500s come back with a broken safety, all newer models with the plastic button. That's the only downside of the mossberg. I especially like the captured magazine cap, as opposed to the 870 which can be dropped. However, I own multiple 870's and no 500's. |

Price decided for me. I bought a used Mossberg 500A from a pawn shop, cleaned it up and it's always functioned 110%. I will never buy another pump unless this one breaks or someone offers more than it's worth.

I have both and I like both of them. I do like the thumb safety on the 500. I haven't had any problems with either one. If I had to choose just one, I would have to go with the 870. I just think it is built a little tougher...Like Squirrelblaster said it's kind of like Pepsi vs Coke...

the 500's safety gets on my nerves .... you have to move you hand to get to it the 870 is swift .... off and to the trigger same motion.

Chevy - Ford argument. I prefer the 500.

If you are comparing the Mossberg 500 and the Remington 870, the 870 is a higher quality arm. Most people that I have met do not have a Remington 870, but the Remington 870 Express. Comparing the lower end Remington 870 Express to the Mossy 500, I find the Mossy 500 equal if not superior in fit and finish. In this case it is like comparing a Cadillac and a Ford, when you actually mean a Chevy and a Ford. |

| Senior Member | the safety on the 500 can easily be fixed just pop a little bead of sylicone on it to hole it in the fire posistion and walla you never have to worrie about that safety again..i keep all my firearms loaded but with nuthing in the chamber and the safety in the fireing position. it only takes me a milly second to rack it back but when i do i never have to worry or guess if i took the safety off.
