question about percussion revolvers

A friend of mine got a 1858 remington revolver replica a couple of years ago and when he bought it he told me that someone can buy a black powder pistol/revolver when your 18 or in between 21,is this true? I'm 19 and would love to get a replica of a black powder revolver,so i thought i'd ask finally and get the info on wether i can or not.
By the way I live in the Super strict state of California.
Any info would be apreciated.
Thanks,

well, I know muzzle loaders are not classified as a firearm, so anyone can legally buy one, but I am unsure of the pistols. I know that is is illegal to use one for hunting deer where I am at, so if you want it for hunting, you might want to check your regulations.
