What I have been using is rubbing alcohal. Works great. I bought a big plastic tube and keep the alcohal in it with a cover. I take the pistol apart and soak it the swab it out oil it and put it up. |

I use #9 with a brass brush on the cylinders and barrel. I remove the nipples and scrub with #9. rinse with hot water. I use bamboo skewers to clean out the tiny holes in the nipples. It's a huge amount of work. The soak and scrub with hot soapy water seems to leave residue here and there. CS |

I've heard that window cleaner with vinegar works good too.

I use a mixture of 1 oz hydrogen peroxide, 1 oz dish soap and 1 oz water soluble cutting oil from Napco in a quart of water. Learned about it from a local BP gunsmith who is a record holder. Also works as a patch lube for the range. It will protect the bore but for the outside of the gun use a gun oil. It was designed by a chemical engineer. The soap and water remove the salts and the oil and peroxide penetrate the pores of the bore.

In my .44 Remington 1859 revolver, I soak the nipples and cylinder in hot soapy water. Even afterwards, there is some crusty stuff left. I use some #9 to clean the cylinders and muzzle. I scrub the nipple with it too. Afterwards, I use olive oil in the cylinder and muzzle. CS |
