| The main disadvantage I find to general use of a compact scope, is eye relief. Often the short scope is too far forward on sporting rifles. Of course, the opposite is true on many milsurps, especially SKS and AK's - the longer scopes can sit too far back for proper eye relief. My 6X full size scope on my Yugo SKS is mounted with both rings behind the adjustment knobs. It looks funky, but it works for me. Another consideration is that most shorty scopes tend to have small objective diameters - 20 or 28mm. I like the 40mm of the larger scopes for the clearer view, more than for magnification. When you get past 40 years of age, this really helps. 'Course, this is just my personal opinions.
