Need input on a gun.

Hello. I am not a new Shooter, but new to hunting deer with Shotgun. I grew up in Idaho hunting with high powered rifles and now live in New York where all hunting is shotguns.

Can anyone recommend a good reliable shotgun, with a smoothbore barrel, auto loader, that is reasonably priced?

I have hunted the last few years borrowing guns from relatives and know I like the Remington 1100, but it's too pricey for my blood. I prefer 12 guage.

Thanks in advance for any input.

**edit**
sorry mods, you can move this to shotguns if needed. :target:

Good question PAPA G

If ya have to have an auto mabe try:

http://www.charlesdaly.com/HTML/prod...to/safield.asp

Turkish made, but apparently not too bad of a gun for the money.

PAPA G,

I guess it does not HAVE to be an Autoloader, but I prefer the auto loaders. I have a bad elbow and it makes it tough for pump. I can shoot them and have no real problems yet, but I am looking for long term. So if you have other thoughts that may be better, please do tell.

Jerry,

Thanks for the link, I will check that out.

Saiga 12 comes in smoothbore 19" barrel. Reliable an accurate, and scopeable with AK military mounts. Based on the AK action for reliability, but in modern hunting configuration. Dealer cost is about $280. Remington will retail pretty high in comparison. Just an option.

If I were to choose an affordably priced shotgun for hunting and the action was not an issue, I'd choose the Benelli Nova. This week I saw a Benelli Nova 26" that was in the local shop. The owner had a cheap 3" Kent brand shell squib in the barrel. The owner fired another shell behind it with NO DAMAGE TO THE SHOTGUN! It was in the shop to clear out the mangled brass, powder and wad(s) from the barrrel. The shotgun was detail stripped before my eyes and had NO DAMAGE WHASOEVER. The Benelli Nova is a pump shotgun. It comes with a set of chokes and can be had in black or camo for around $350.00. Dicks Sporting Goods sells them.

I can honestly say that if the Benelli Nova owner had this incident happen with a Remington 870, he may not have a hand or arm at this time!

You can't go wrong with a Remington 1100. Don't worry too much about getting an expensive rifled barrel. At the ranges you'll be shooting a smoothbore should work just fine.

My smoothbore 12 ga. 1100 puts the "two bucks for a box of five" rifled slugs in a 3' group at 50 yards - plenty accurate enough for deer.

If recoil is a problem, consider a 20 ga. Some "experts" will tell you a 20 ga. is too light, but this is BS. At close range a 20 ga. slugs hits like a .45/70 and will flatten a deer right quick. I've seen it happen, and I'll bet some of other guys on this site can verify.

OOPS! - meant to say my 1100 will group 3 inches at 50 yds - not 3 feet. (I once had a Sterling .25 that wouldn't group 3 feet at 50 yards, but that's another story...)

Thanks for all the feedback.

The saiga 12 has also been refered by another guy I talked to a few weeks ago. I have looked it over and it looks great. I am trying to get the owner of the gun shop near me to get a used one I can fire to check it out.

The Rem 1100 is definitely a darn good gun. I too have been able to get a 3" pattern at about 75 yards. The price is the only kicker for me. I have been seeing them go for around $800 used with a smoothbore deer barrel. I can get a brand new one with a bird barrel for about $600, but then I'd still have to buy a new barrel for it. Seems strange. But that's new york for ya.

Charles Daily makes a real good synthetic auto loader for a real good price.

Figure a Saiga costs the dealer $280, add shippin, and a minimum fee of say $20, or up to 10% or so, you're looking at $320 out the door. Or say he really gouges you and marks up 20%, you're looking at $350. Or let's get extreme and say he does 40% like the dealer here did before he went out of business, about $410. Still way beneath the Remington. Go to www.cdnninvestments.com and ask for a catalog. Give it to your dealer and ask him to order the Saiga for you and how much it would cost in the end. Sometimes dealers don't get very aggressive about finding the best prices to pass on to their customers.

The good dealers will work with you on getting the best deal, and just talk straight about their markups and fees. Some try to hide it and get secretive about how much they really pay for the guns they sell. We know they need to make a profit in order to be able to stay in business, and the good ones know that we know and recognize our intelligence.

They Saiga is made for 3" Magnum 12 ga. rounds. The manual claims it works with 2 3/4" and 2 7/8" shells, but it does not do so reliably, in my experience. It works well with the 3", though. Only 5 round mags are currently available due to the Klinton ban. Once it expires, higher capacities should be out.

Is the gas system adjustable?

I'm about to buy the 20ga, any thoughts or warnings?
