.300, .308, or 7mm?

I'm looking into finding a rifle to sporterize myself over x-period of time. Recoil doesn't matter to me, but I'm going to distance and accuracy. What would be a good caliber to choose? I would be looking for something used around the $300 range, and go from there.

That's kinda what I'm thinking, but why the .308 over the .300 mag? Different velocities? I know my dad used a .308 when he was a Marine, but I didn't kow exactly why.

I'd go with it because of cost and battlefield proven reliabilty and knockdown power.

Thanks! Now to find one...
I had thought about souping up the .223, but I use it too much for hunting.

Cut the difference and get a Rem 700 ADL 30-06 or a used BDL. 30-06 is right in between a .308 and a .300 mag and easy ammo, lots of choices. You go out to the boonies to hunt and forget your ammo, you will find some place that sales 30-06 ammo.

That IS true, (to most rednecks here in Arkansas, the ONLY rifle is a 30-06) But the .308 or .300 will be target-only. I use my brother's 30-30 for a brush gun.

Do you ever intend to get into reloading or not?

If not I'd go for the .308 if it's just for sport shooting.

The 30.06 is a VERY close second, and in some instances, better.

If you're gonna get into reloading either round can be refined to a good and super accurate recipe for the gun. Any gun as long as it's not a sloppy action and the chamber and bore is not shot.

With either the 30.06 or .308 your putting out the same bullet. The .308 can be refined just a hair better than 30.06... but not enough to matter unless you get into competition shooting or long range shooting (300 yd plus).

One day I do plan to get into reloading. Not within the next year or so, though. I have a car hobby (a really big one) and I'm just now adding sport shooting, so I don't have the time to put forth. You guys are great about info here!

What range you plan to shoot at? If it's target only, no hunting, I'd say 308 definitely. Most affordable, lowest recoil, most common, almost as powerful as 30-06 (practically the same ballistics), chambered the most accurate of rifles.

Thumbs up

I'd agree with the .308, unless you wanted to get into extreme-long range - that's where the magnums would shine.
I'm partial to Savages, especially with the new adjustable trigger - very nice! They tend to be more affordable than the Remchesters, though you can find used Remingtons and Winchesters for a decent price.

Extreme long range is considered... anything over 700 meters? I maxed my ability out at a 300 meter range with a 30.06 one time, but I'd like to see how far I could stretch it.
