At 18 , you can own long guns...Rifles and shotguns without any problem here in Alaska...
Sounds like you have a good friend and mentor to work with learning shooting and safety. At 16, you should contact Fish and Game and take a hunters Safety Course, and when you are certified, you can legally hunt Big game, with a high powered rifle in the company of an adult.

there are perks to having army vets for friends, they can teach you everything you need to know about gun safety, and they are there to chew you out for breaking safety rules
