Rookie,
A lot of good advice out here on this subject, lot's to ponder.

So here is mine,

Find a Good Gun Shop, (the best are ran by MOM and POP),
you know, the place that tells you to grab a cookie and a cup of coffee when you walk-in to the shop. Kick back and open fire with the Questions.

Tell them what YOU want to do, and listen to what they tell you.

Keep an open mind to what they suggest.

Ask about shooting classes, courses.

Finally PRACTICE, how the gun is disassembled for cleaning and then reassembled after you are done, how the gun "Handles" and finally LOTS of Range time.

Armorer, cut the dude some slack ok? He is here for all the info he can get, and THAT is what we are here for. First-provide info for the old timer and the novice. Second-visit with other like-minded people.

on the other note, when i went to GUN WORLD, i picked up some info on a course. It is provided by NITACwww.nitac.org , the guy said it was the best one. the problem is you have to be 21 and own a gun! check the site out, it seems like a pretty well organized thing, i will probably try another course first were i don't need a gun( <-- haha) and then do that course(s) when i own a semi-automatic pistol( <-- better!).

My reply is............I'm staying outta this one. Not because I don't agree...because I do...there is a lot of good info given to Rookie.

I'm staying out of it because the info is getting somewhat overwhelming. So, I won't give my two cents. Dang, I gave it anyway didn't I? LOL

O.K. Rookie You have obviously seen that there are a lot of opnions, that are just like .......... well you know what I mean.
My humble suggestion would be to learn to shoot well first. adapting to a duty side arm will happen when you get a job. they will probably provide for you or enable you to purchase what ever handgun you will be required to carry.
There fore before you go out and buy a Sig/Glock/Beretta/whateva
I would suggest you learn how to shoot well. (putting the bullets where you want them to go)
Of course you need to do this safely
In My Humble Opinion (IMHO)
A Ruger MkII .22 pistol is the easyiest pistol to learn how to shoot well.
and Cheap to shoot!
It is a lot easier to go out and shoot 300 rnds of practice
with a .22 than a .40 or 9mm and a lot less expensive.
When you get a job then you may get free practice ammo
For now it's up to you.
All this good advise IS good advise.
You have to go DO it
It is up to You and what is in your heart.
Remember the most important Quality in a LEO is Integrity
It is Not the Quality most found.
