| I'm sorry to see this forum hasn't been used for a while. I've been shooting a pistol for about a year now trying to learn to shoot for self defense. I'd like to hear from other beginning shooters. Regards, Shane |

| Well, most of us aren't beginners anymore, but as a police officer I would be happy to help you with what ever you need. Also, there are plenty of members here who are highly conversive in self-defense shooting.

| Well..... Howdy, I'd hesitate to call myself an expert, but I have never pulled a Barney Fife and fired a round into a holster, nor have I shot myself....... However, if you are practicing for self defense, do so by shooting with Both hands, your strong hand and your weak hand. Also try and simulate real life situations. Shoot at odd angles and from lying flat on your back sit up and fire. Use caution though as you may get kicked out of an indoor range for lying down and shooting. More importantly, get a safe storage device for your gun. You know one o them small keypad operated safes for next to the bed? No sense training well and letting the badguy get your gun 1st. Just some semi random thoughts.

| Dear Folks, Thanks for all the replies. I look forward to "talking" with you more. Right now I have a Bulgarian military surplus Makarov. It's small enough to fit in a coat pocket and mild enough that I can shoot it reasonably accurately. Eventually I want to get something stronger. Probably my next gun will be a 9x19 or .45 ACP. Regards, Shane |

| Senior Member | Makorov is a good pocket gun. I wouldn't trade it in. It's a hard pistol to beat.

| But I think most LEO's went to 9mm because they CHS(can't hit Sheet)... .45 all the way for personal defense...If you hit someone with a .45...they will go down....may get back up,(slowly) but they will go down...

| 45's aren't all that. If it weren't for the US Army legacy, the 45 wouldn't be as big. I'm believing in 10mm more every time I tkae mine to the range. It's the same size as a 45, but with loads more muzzle energy. I know the FBI dropped it for the 40S&W, but if you can hold a 45 comfortably, you can shoot 10mm with just a little practice.

| Senior Member ![]() | The FBI carries .45's again. I Springfield won the contract. It was called the FBI model, but the FBI said to stop calling it that. I forget what the model is called now...TR something or other.
