As long as you hold it tight to your shoulder and lean forward it isn't to bad. But when shooting prone...it hurts a tad.

Doesnt ATI have a stock for the Mosin that has a kick pad built into it? Just a suggestion.

Yes they do. I like it more so for the longer length of pull, the rubber recoil pad is nice as well.

I'm 5'9, I weigh 240 pounds.

Thanks for the advice, everyone! Gun safety certainly does sound important.

ok yea start yourself with a .22 marlin 795 if you want to spend about 100 bones and a ruger 10/22 if you want to spend 200, take the online safety course and hook up with a buddy who shoots and then go to the range with him and learn the fundamentals after that you can go up to whatever caliber or type of rifle youd like (hopefully you have a a buddy or buddies with some good inventory )

Thanks for the reply.

The reasoning, for all my original questions.
Was for your safety, and the safety of others.
Who might read this thread or forum.

I saw your previous threads.
Referring to playing vidio games.
And I surmised you had never been around, real firearms.
Forget EVERYTHING you learned, from playing games.

With that said.
Your a big enough fella, to handle a REAL firearm.
But REAL firearms are not toys.
They have recoil, loud noise, back blast & require brain power.
They are designed for one purpose.
Punching holes in targets, or flesh.
Which means something always ends, full of holes or dead!

As a newbie to real firearms.
Read all you can, about proper shooting & safety.
Join a gun club, or range.
Talk and ask questions, to the "older" shooters.
Most shooters, will be glad to help, a younger shooter.
See if you can rent a gun, for range shooting.
With a experienced shooter, or range master present.

As many other folks, have already stated.
A .22 rifle, is a good gun to start, with.

I do disagree, on one thing.
I think a novice, should start with a single shot rifle.
As it teaches, more technique, & precision shooting.
Then just dumping, a bunch of rounds downrange.

I hope this is helpful.
And welcome to the addictive world, of gun ownership!

I can shoot a Mosin all day, the recoil doesn't bother me as I'm used to getting whacked. Might want to ease yourself into it first. And firearm safety is MOST important!

BTW, I'm 5'9" and 20 pounds lighter than you. You should be fine.

im 6'0 and 185lbs and my shoulder is a little sore after about 50 rounds out of my MN 91/30 for a day or two, i guess i need some more padding?

I started off with a 10/22, and I recommend a .22 rifle along with everyone else. While I like the Ruger, it doesn't really matter which one you choose, just find one that you like, go to gun stores and hold all of the options, pick which one feels the best to you. All of the offerings from the big name manufacturers are good enough quality.

I now have 4 guns, 3 rifles and one pistol and the .22lr gets shot more than all the others combined, but thats probably because ammo is only .03 cents a round! But its also a joy to shoot, and it still uses all the same fundamentals of the other rifles, especially handling, cleaning and maintenance.

I think that you'll find that most people at gun ranges are very friendly and would be more than willing to give a few pointers to a new shooter. look for the older guy with and old bolt action hunting rifle that looks like he knows what hes doing, chances are he does.

avoid the younger ones with ak's talking about clips and what not, chances are they'll give you wrong info ( just my experience, not directed towards any of the fine AK owning firearm enthusiasts on this forum).

I think its funny when some of them refer to a MAGAZINE as a CLIP. They watch way too many movies and dont know squat about there firearms. My younger brother does that too drives me nuts! I'd have to say there are a select few around my age (25) that know enough to give you solid information. Unless of coarse they are on this forum LOL or in the Military and or Police force oh and since everyone giving there size I'm 6 foot and 360 pounds I can shoot ANYTHING mmmwwahahahahahahaha.

I think you could handle just about any rifle you want. It is rifle you want right? I started with a .22 single shot. But when I shot a my first shotgun, well the .22 just didint hold the same interest. Many years later I bought my first old military rifle. A Mauser 7x57. I shot it. All my friends shot it. My friends kids shot it. People I didnt even know shot it. I will bet the same will happen to you if you start with a .22.

Really learn how to be safe. Learn again how to be safe. Then keep learning how to be safe with firearms. Happy shooting.

I am pretty new to guns, really only in the last few years and all I was shooting was .22's for a bit and I dont hunt so I wasnt used to the beating from deer rifle calibers but they are fun for a few shots. The only reason I didnt buy a 22 rifle was because there are about 20 of them floating around when I go out with family instead I just spent $99 on a .410 shotgun and it has been perfect for me so far.
I would also say that everyone should start with a .22 long rifle as a beginners gun because if they like it they can go big and if they dont like it they havent blown a huge pile of money.

Deer rifles really dont kick that bad You get use to it. Shoot I am at the point that when I go shooting I always come back with a bruised arm , but its just something im use to now. Its not till the next day it kinda bothers me .But the average guns that are at our little shoot outs between me and my buddies just to name a couple of em

12 guage shotguns up to 3.5 inch
.22lr
.300 winmag
45-70
30-30
saiga 12
Mosin Negant
a old school 2 inch bore black powder cannon (you dont shoulder that one )
.380
9mm
.44mag
.460 Roland
.45
.270win

I think you get the point, theres alot more there usually but those just ones i could pick off the top of my head

If you think the average deer rifle kicks you should try shooting a .338 mag.
