Scope Questions from the new guy

Hey guys this is my first post, I have a ? that maybe some of you can answer.
I have a new savage low profile varminter in .204 coming my way, and im in the market for a scope for it. Ive always been a fan of luepold and nikon but in my search i stumpled upon a brand called mueller. I have no experience with these scopes but it seems that for the price you can get a lot of scope. I believe in the you get what you pay for motto and it would seem to apply to this brand, but im not sure. So, are this things worth anything or are they cheap china knock offs like Im tending to believe. Im not gonna put one on this gun, but maybe if they are decent ill put one on a cheap truck gun I have. So, any input would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I have a Mueller APV (all purpose variable) and it's a decent scope for 115 bucks shipped. Comes with a sunshade and is 4.5-14 power. I have it on a 17HMR. You should check out the Eraticator, it might work out fine for your 204. It's 230 bucks.

alot of people like them on their rimfires. if you intend to do more than shoot paper with this rifle, buy a known quality scope. meullers are made in china. hi end nikons, and leupolds make good entry level varmint scopes.

Thanks for the input guys. I looked at the eraticator and was kinda suspicious because a luepold or nikon is 3-5 times more expensive but it did look pretty darn good for 250 or whatever it is. Right now Im looking at the nikon monarch UCC 5.5-16.5AO for not quite $400, it looks like a pretty good scope for this gun I think.

Nikons are also good scopes. Check out the Nikon Buckmasters.

Will do, thanks for the suggestion. I just wish the darn gun would show up so I can go plink some rockchucks and a few hundred groundsquirrels with it and the .17 HMR.

Like you said, "you get what you pay for." Although Cheap-ees are much better than they were years ago.
You want to look at scopes get a Natchez catolog.

There's alotta nice scope brands out there but if I may make a generalization? Tiny calibers like .204 and 17M2 and 17HMR seem to like high power magnification 20x and up. It's hard to spot those tiny holes in paper at 100yds unless you have a powerful scope. A good high power scope cost alotta money. There seems to be an inverse analogy: tiny bullets need big scopes.

I need a hunting scope for a Ruger Hawkeye in 308 caliber that should be in by friday. Can anyone one tell me what model and brand would be a good one that cost no more than $200.00. Would like a varable power type. Thanks A.H

Thanks for the advice guys. Yeah small guns need big scopes, but this isnt going to be a paper puncher besides siteing it in, its going to be a coyote varmit gun. Ill try to find a more powerful one in the 4-5 hundred dollar range. I like buying good quality stuff but at 18 I find it hard to spend more than the guns original price even though I make a lot of money for my age. Its not that I dont have the money, thats not an issue, I just dont really see a big difference in performance for spending another 3-4 hundred dollars; its just not worth it to me.

Thanks for the help guys. This wont be a paper puncher but I do want a nice big scope. To me its hard to justify spending 800-900 on a scope when I cant tell the difference from a 4-5 hundred dollar one. Moneys not the issue even though Im only 18, its just that I dont see that much difference but maybe I just havnt seen very good scopes. Im also going to need to find one for the 308 I am going to buy shortly, so Im doing a lot of research.

For your savage in 204 i would go for something along the lines of a
4.5 x 14 x 50 vx111 leupold with a varmint reticle that scope is great.

You say you can tell the differenece between them?
lay down around dusk and tell me there ain't no difference leupold kicks ***.
But if money is a problem try a 6 x 18 x 40 vx2 leupold next best to vx3

Yeah Ive never had the chance to compared two scopes from those prices ranges side by side, but in the store I cant tell any difference looking around at stuff. Moneys not an issue, college is paid for (scholarships take care of it all) and I make 18 an hour so I can buy whichever scope I want, its just that Id like to save as much as possible AND get a nice high quality scope. I think Im going to go to cabelas tomorrow and go check out some high end luepolds and see what they are like. I want this gun to be a tack driver, so I need some good glass.

if you dont really plan on shooting over 300yds, the better mid range scopes will work well if you dont crank up the zoom. most scopes have very poor resolution much past 14X in the heat of the day.

14x is as much as you will need IMO the 204 is a bit limited in its range so 300m would just about pull it up.
I have 4.5x14x50 vx3,6x18x40 vx2,6.5x20x50 vx3,4x12x40 vx1,now in the middle of the day i cant tell the difference between them but when the sun starts to dwindle away i assure you the 4.5x14x50 will be a stand out amonst all of them.

If moneys is no object buy a vx3 you wont be dispointed just think of the Leupold sales pitch "you dont own a leupold your just taking care of it for the next generation"

Weaver and Burris make good products as well and are usually a bit cheaper.

Well went to cabelas today, and went and looked at a VXIII 6.5-20 or something close to that. Oh my god is that thing sweet, I just couldnt stomach spending 800 more on top of the $600 of stuff I bought, maybe next week
