Chosing a Scope

Ok. I'm new to the world of scopes but have accepted that scopes are becoming a fact of life right now. I can no longer see my front sights. I have chosen a scope for my K31, but now I have a new rifle.

I picked up a Ruger 10/22 this afternoon. I am thinking about getting it a scope with my next paycheck. Here's what I need. Something inexpensive (note the difference between "inexpensive" and "cheap") because I am on a little bit of a budget and I also don't really want to drop a lot of money into a scope for a gun I will use for nothing other than plinking. When I get the rifle of my dreams I'll also get the scope of my dreams. But for right now, I need to get a scope that can get me on target at about 50 to 75 yards or less. I don't need illuminated reticles or anything like that. I just need something to help me see and hopefully not lose zeroing every time I move the rifle. Any thoughts?

Bushnell has some decent $75.00 lifetime warranty scopes specifically designed for air rifles but hear me out. They focus nice and crisp with the crosshair starting around 15 yards which is hard to find in most scopes. I purchased two of them and placed the one on the air gun above and intended on putting the other on my .22 mag but ended up giving it away as a christmas gift.

Scopes specifically designed for .22 exist but are a speciality item. Most people end up putting big game scopes on their .22 and don't get a nice crisp focus in close. They work ok...but the focus is really designed to begin where you plan on ending your max plinking range (75 yards).

I'd say when you look at scopes somewhere have them show you the air rifles scopes too. They would work fine on your 10/22.

Most big game scopes are parallax adjusted for 100+ yards and consequently are not as clear as they could be at closer ranges. I would be looking at scopes that either have an adjustable objective or are parallax adjusted for closer ranges.

Several manufactures have rim fire specific models that would be ideal for the 75 yard maximum range you mentioned. I've had a Simmons 4X 22 Mag scope on my Henry for years and it works fine. Weaver makes some very nice rim fire scopes.

Get on ebay, and search "Vintage Scopes". Lots of great scopes there. I would buy something intended for a 22lr.

You might consider a see-thru mount, The irons might be nice for closer than 25yds.

No personal experience but a number of people at Rimfire Central seem to speak highly of the Mueller APV, and in particular this dealer which sells them for $115 including shipping. It has an adjustable objective which is useful in a rimfire scope.

If you do a search of this forum, you will find many threads on the APV.
