Scope Adjustment

I am probably going to sound like a new here... but the manual with my scope doesnt really help me at all. so i figured i would post up here.

I am sighting my savage 308 in w/ my bushnell legend 5-15x40 scope.
I am getting a real tight group that is a bit high and to the left of my target.

Now i am wondering, since its left do i turn the windage to the left or right?
and if i am shooting high do i want to lower the elevation or raise it? i heard if your shooting hih you want to raise it because your sights will be different but your barrel will still be in the same place or something like that. I just wasnt sure, and before i go on putting more shots down range i wanted to be sure im tuning it the right way!

thanks, and sorry for the noobish question

Yea, if your group is off to the left, you adjust to the right. If your group is high, adjust down.

If your shots are down and left, you adjust them up and right. Does that help?

i have 8 shots in a 3 inch group at 150 yards. They are all to the left and a bit high of my target. So tomorrow when i go out. i will adjust it to the right some, and down some
and i some how have on in the bulleye above the target i was shooting at lol. I have 3 targets lined up vertically with carboard behind it nailed to a tree.. i was aming at the center target and to the right some. and ended up hiting the bullseye of the top target lol

thanks you again!

Well the weather will more then likely be different, which will affect your shots. Just start over and try it this way. Do another 3 shot group keeping the rifle (assuming you're zeroing the scope on a rifle) in the same spot for each shot, aiming at the same spot. Then, when you're ready to zero it in, put the rifle in the exact same spot you took to 3 shots from, aim at that same spot, keep it there and put the center of the crosshairs on the center of that 3 shot group. Then take another shot at the center of the target and see where you're at...
Try it that way. Good luck and let me know how that worked out.

that kind of confused me haha.
what you are saying is: set the scope back to zeron on evelvation and windage, put my corsshairs in the center of the target, and see where the group lands....and then start chanings stuff from there?

if you are hitting high and to the left, turn ur top knob clockwise/right and ur side knob counter clockwise/left.

what distance are you shooting ur target?

evil,

im going to have to say that doesnt really make that much sense to me, especially that last line haha. if im shooting left why would i move my side knob to the left? wouldnt that make me shoot even farther to the left?

No. Since you have to go back tomorrow, just start over.

Shoot your 3 shot group. When you shoot your group, make sure to try and shoot with the rifle in the same spot, aiming at the same spot each time. Then, put the rifle in that same spot, aiming at that same spot, as if you were going to shoot a fourth shot, only this time, hold the rifle and aim at that same spot, find the center of your 3 shot group and move the crosshair to the center of that 3 shot group. Then shoot at the center of the target and it should be about dead on.

on the scope i have sitting here it shows something like this on the side knob ---L--> which means that if u turn it right it will move the crosshairs left, so u need to turn it Left which will move the crosshairs right, and opposite of where ur hitting like GlockMeister said.

ps. its saturday night and im a little buzzed, so maybe im not makin much sense. haha.

still kind of confused.
i aim at the center of my 3 shot group? even if its towards the left (off the target, but still on the cardboard)? then while keeping aimed at that adjust the windage and elevation? so that i am gun is pointed towards the group but im moving my scope cross hairs towards the center of the target? then reposition and make the next group?

oh ok, i think i get it, my scope has the ---R-->... so if i turn that it will move the crosshairs left? but if i move the knob left it will move it right?

the way i think of it is like this, and i hope this makes sense to other people besides me.hehe.

if i shoot as u did and i hit high and to the left, then in my head im thinking turn the top knob right (because im hitting up) and turn the side knob left (because im hitting left) of the target. i think of it like a car blinker, right-up and down-left for the up and down crosshair. the side knob ,if u hit left turn it left, if u hit right turn it right. does that make sense ? sorry if im confusing you. everyone has their own way of thinking stuff, and mine might be a bit weird, i dunno. haha.

that makes more sense... so if i hit high, then turn it up... if i hit low, then turn it down. if i hit left turn it left, if i hit right turn it right?

and i get the car blinker thing: if i want to turn right push it up (which in my mind is to the right), if i want to turn left, push down (again to me is left)
so pretty much if i keep hitting left just keep turning it left until i get it zero'd on the center?

im still kind of confused now because i have two different answers from two people lol.
one says if you shoot left turn right, other is if you shot left turn left

hehe, well, the thing is, i think me and Glock are saying the same thing, just in different ways.

if u shoot and miss left, u turn it left which is actually moving ur cross hairs right. as Glock said, to move ur crosshairs opposite of ur missed shot. you know what im sayin? its just easier for me to think of it the way i do.

hit left, turn left. hit right turn right. hit high turn right. hit low turn left.

put it in a solid rest .
fire it.
without moving the rifle adjust the cross hairs until they are directly on the hole you just made.
do it again.
done.

gun is all sighted it, and its shooting amazing at about 125yards! will post pics of the target up later!

the ones that are high and/or to the left are when we started sighting the gun in, ones in the middle are when we got it sighted in even better!

overall i am very happy with the results i got today!
