Thumbs down Weaver Style Bases

Does anyone besides me dislike Weaver style bases? I think they are UGLY, even on really cheap guns! I won't buy a new gun that comes with them already installed.

dont mind the bases that much its the rings you have to look out for, they make good ones and really cheap ones for those bases, mounted right they will hold up

I agree, they got some that look cheap. The ones I speak of have screws on only one side and kind of just hook on the other side. Don't seem all that strong a hold on the scope to me? But then that's me. But then, they do make some good scope rings also. Half of one, dozen of another. Another one of those personal preference issues.

I totally agree that rings bases are different enough that some hunters and shooters much prefer one type over the other. I don't care for the Weaver side clip rings mostly because they tend to mar a scope more than some other types. Of course, If I'd stop fiddling and changing scopes, this might not be an issue. ..lol. But, I do believe they are quite strong and work very well on even strong recoiling rifles. They are simply unnatractive enough so I prefer Warnes for angle lock bases. I read a very interesting article a while back where they were testing a model 700 Reminton Titanium in 30/06(about 5.5lbs). They made a point to mention 2 interesting things. The rifle was brutal recoil-wise with heavy '06 loads and, that they destroyed a quality scope during testing as well as having to switch FROM turn-in / dovetail rings/bases because they could not prevent the scope from moving in/on them. They used Weavers instead and had no further problem with the new scope(Leupold, I think) neither with scope moving or breaking. They stated flatly that quality angle lock rings and bases were better for stout recoil than dovetail/turn-in types. They did say that double turn-in styles were strong as well. I was quite surprised at that information. I was not surprised about their comments on the 700 Titanium though, as I own one in .270 and that's as much as I'd want to shoot in that rifle comfortably. It recoils about as much as my .300SAUM 673.

I like them just fine. I'm surprised someone would dislike a small piece that you can hardly see on the gun.

They also have the advantage of allowing a whole range of rings from different manufacturers to fit them. Some Weaver rings I don't like though.
