What is better?

Hi everyone,

I'm currently looking at buying a scope for my fathers rifle. He owns a .308win which currently has a broken scope. I live in Australia so price and availability are an issue. I am looking to spend around $250 - $300AUD. We intend to use the rifle for a bit of hunting and maybe some short range target shooting out to maybe 200yards.

I have been looking at leupold scopes but I really don't have that kind of money to spend. I am tossing up between two brands, Tasco and Bushnell. Where i live, i have a gunshop within a short distance, they have the Tasco World Class 4-16X50AO for $150. They also sell Bushnell Banner optics. There is a 4-12X40AO for $245.

Has anyone had any dealings with these scopes or know of what sort of quality they are? I require a scope that can handle the recoil and a little bit of rough handling. I would appreciate it if you could give me your preference and why. I intend to purchase some good scope mounts also.

Let me know what you guys think ASAP!

Thanks

Lachie

P.S What does AO mean?

AO means adjustable objective
Adjustable Objective An adjustable objective is a dial around the objective end of the scope, or a knob on the left side of the turret housing that allows you to adjust your scope's parallax to a certain distance by moving these adjustments until a clear picture is perceived, and/or the marked corresponding incremental yardages are approximated to your target distance. The correct setting of an adjustable objective prevents the apparent movement between the reticle and the target when the shooter moves his head slightly off center of the rifle scope.

For that money, I'd go with a Nikon Buckmaster or any of the Leupold series.

Of the two you mention, I would go with the Bushnell.

A 308 is not a typical candidate for an AO. An AO scope corrects for focus and parallax when you use a high power scope at short distances. More typical need is 22LR. Bushnell Banner is not a bad lower cost scope. The one I have is made in Korea. No issues with it.

I guess what i really need to know then....are Tasco scopes good. Would their World Class 4-16X40 be of good quality and could it handle to recoil on the .308? Also i want to know if it is the same with the bushnell Banner. Can they handle the recoil of a .308 and are they good quality?

Cheers
