Talking Ziess vs. Leupold

I will be getting a Weatherby Vanguard stainless/synthetic bolt action deer hunting rifle in the 7mm Remington Caliber. I am debating on scopes between the Ziess Conquest 3-9 x 40mm (z-plex) and the Leupold VX-III 3.5-10 x 40mm (duplex). I am not looking to spend anymore than the price of these.

What is a better scope for my situation? are there any other scopes that would be at this level that will be better for me?

I will hunt in northern MI along corn field and in woods. And an occasional trip out west.

thanks

Between the 2, I'll pick the Zeiss anyday. For comparable price and quality, take a look at bushnell elite's, sightron, and burris.

Leupold offers a custom workshop for it's scopes. You can install different retcicles, and or upgrade it. I have experimented with their reticles seeing what I liked. The custom scope shop is why I stay with them.

I dropped a pair of binocs out of a tree and cracked a part that cost over $250.00 they replaced free no questions asked.

Here are a couple of links which give opinions on relative quality. I see they don't agree which one is the higher quality.

Recommended Riflescopes

The Optics Talk Forums: SWFA Riflescope Rating Scale

Both are more than I would spend. It think if I was in the market for a hunting scope, I would give the Bushnell 3200 serious consideration, and if that is not good enough then the 4200. Here are a couple of current good buys on the 3200 with the Browning name on them.

You don't need a 9 or 10 power scope for deer hunting. Find a 1.5-4 or 1.5-5 variable if you must have a variable. You will save money.

Now, truth be told, my deer rifles all sport 3-9 scopes, because that's what they came with. (I usually buy used guns.) I use them on 3x. If you can't put the bullet where you want it at 3x, 9x won't help. At low power, images are much brighter and clearer.

I own a Zeiss Conquest 3-9x40 (great scope) along with several Leupolds, as many as 10 or 12. I'd suggest the only Leupold I've ever owned which I felt to be superior to the Zeiss, the European 30mm model. I own two of these scopes and feel them to be the absolute best scope I've ever seen in this price range. Two models would work for you, the 2-7x33 or the 3-9x40, both are 30mm tubes. Best of luck!

THESE LINKS INCLUDE REVIEWS, BUT YOU MIGHT FIND A BETTER PRICE AT GRAF & SONS, MIDSOUTH SS, BEAR BASIN OPTICS OR SWFA.

actually....4x power sometimes isn't very good, especially for ppl that are too lazy to go searching for deer to shoot<points at mirror>, or if you run dogs(for shooting across wheat fields, etc). and so, a higher power is needed to keep ur reticle from covering up your target. i gots a big-azz headache, nitey.

I have owned both Ziess and Leupold. Both are nice, but I would say the Ziess is better. They are wonderfull scopes. However, you would not be disappointed in either.
