I Give Up

Ok, so I need another scope for my 10/22. I have tried, really I have, but I made the mistake of getting a scope with a large bell (I knew it was going to give me issues when I was looking at it, but I bought it anyway), so it is up too high, and I can't hold the rifle very well. Which means I'm not having much luck getting it dialed in. So I'm looking for a scope with a smaller bell.

Here's what I need. Something under $150 with a bell smaller than 50. What I have now is a 3-9x50. I like it a lot, it is actually very clear, but I am just not doing well with it. I plan on selling off the scope and the rings and getting a new set. I'll take a loss on the scope, of course, which is fine. If anyone's interested, I'll let you know when it hits gunbroker.com.

Anyway! What do you all suggest to fit my needs? I need something that I can sit on low to medium rings. Fairly inexpensive (under $150). Good for a Ruger 10/22. Probably won't use it for hunting varmints, but certainly will for target shooting. And if any of you get scopes online, where's a good place to look?

Sucklead, here's one I'd recommend, but you can get a good rimfire scope for less if you shop around. Natchez Shooters Supply has a good selection of new and refurbed scopes at good prices as well.

MidwayUSA - Sightron S1 Rimfire Rifle Scope 3-9x 32mm Fine Crosshair Reticle Matte

Sucklead, I bought a Sightron SI series 3-9X40mm for mine. It looks great although there were some sort of particles stuck to the underside of the objective lens. Nothing that will interfere in using it though.

But, I did do a little bit of bartering and got a brand new NCStar 3-9X40mm. Item #SFB3940R. And I can honestly say this. I paid $115.00 for the Sightron, got the NCStar for free basically and it sells for $39.95. At least that's what the guy I got it from sells it for. But in my honest opinion, the NCStar has far better clarity then the Sightron. I know, people think they suck. All I can say is this. At least find one, in this item #, and look through it. I'm honestly stuck as to which one I should use now. Sure, the Sightron has more people saying it's a good scope or it's better then NCStars, but I tell you what, I beg to differ as far as clarity and appearance. I haven't mounted either one yet, but I'll let you and everyone else know when I do and what I think after shooting it with it. That might take a while as I'm in Illinois and where I'm at, there aren't any rifle ranges so I'll have to travel a bit. YES, IT SUCKS BIG TIME!!!

By the way, the NCStar comes with rings. Another thing I'd like to point out, NCStar is made right here in the good ole U.S. of A...

For a .22, I've even had good luck with the cheap BSA's from Wally World for under $30. The .22's have such light recoil that the only real concerns are clarity, repeatability, and fogging issues. I put a cheap BSA Classic on my Marlin M-39 and it's worked flawlessly since day one. I've also had good luck with the Simmons .22 Mag series. I just like the Sightron because of the finger adjustments for W\E, and the fact that the warranty is so good.

Mike, the only Bushy that I've had any experience with was the one that came on my stepson's Savage from Wally World and it developed a wandering zero condition within 50 rds. On the other hand, it was on a lightweight .270, not a .22 mag. I know a lot of folks say the BSA's are junk, but I like mine as well as any scope I've owned for a .22.

I've also heard good things about the Millet brands, but know of no one that's used one or that has one to say one way or the other other then that...

I know if you look through the NCStar, you'll like what you see and then you'll try it. I bet you'll like it as well. Your call. But I'm serious as to the quality for the price. And for $39.95, I think it's far better then the $115 I paid for the Sightron. I'm thinking of sending the Sightron back it's that much clearer to me. The guy I bought it from uses one of the NCStars Mark IIIs on his AR for hunting and has never had a problem when I asked how it's worked out for him.

I hate to sound as if I'm selling them, I'm not. I just think they better then people say...I remember back when I was a teenager and just getting into hunting/shooting. Back then Simmons and Tasco were both junk. Now people like them. I think NCStar is getting the same rap?

I just put a BSA on my 10/22 and I like it. 4X32 $24.67 at Wal-Mart. It didn't come with rings but they were closing out some Simmons rings so I got those for five bucks. It isn't anything spectacular but I think it's great for just having fun.

My issue actually got solved. I'm taking the scope I have on it now off and putting it on my K31... eventually. But I bought a BSA red dot off a customer for $5. Can't beat that.

I hope you're not planning on any target shooting with it, that dot covers a lot of real estate. They're great for plinking at close ranges tho.

Due to the lack of outdoor ranges here, I'll be shooting between 25 and 50 yards, depending on the range of the day.

I feel for ya' with the lack of ranges Sucklead. I have a the same problem where I'm at. And after hearing how costly it is to open one let alone keeping it running. Dam EPA. If it's a new indoor range you're trying to open, they make you spend a small fortune for or on the ventilation system. And outdoor, they just seem to make people jump through hoops. And the hardest thing if the land isn't already zoned for it, is getting it zoned.

The negative spin people have put on guns, when a person needs rezoning, around here anyways, you sometimes need signatures from any one that may live near where you're trying to build this outdoor range. Let's just say, doors are very hard to get opened to get a signature once you say what you need and why.

I looked into opening one, because there just isn't anything decent. Even the land isn't cheap, and hen when you factor in all the other stuff, FORGET it. I've realized it's cheaper to just MOVE, and that's what I've decided to do. lol

Good luck to ya' and glad for the time being you found something you like.
