Hoppe's or Butch's gun cleaner

My Dad uses Butch's bore solvent and Butch's gun oil and says it works just fine. But I've been hearing a lot about Hoppe's stuff and was wondering which one everyone thought worked better?

butchs bore shine is far and away the superior copper/powder solvent. hoppes aint even in the same league. hoppes still sells because of its reputaion from the "old days", not because how it works.

I ain't buyin' no more Hoppes, after I use this bottle up. Not good at all on removing copper fouling. This is my third day on a .243, working on copper. Soak bore, swab bore until patch comes out clean, brush bore swab bore, yadda yadda. Dam copper still coming out of barrel. I'm think going back to laquer thinner, or Butch's stuff. Or formaldehyde or something other than Hoppes. Like my good buddy Lefty said, it's living off it's old reputation. Must be making it in Bangladesh or China or somewhere else, these days.

I use Birchwood-Casey Bore Scrubber - much stronger and better than Hoppes! It has the ammonia to deal with corrosive surplus ammo, and gets out stuff Hoppes doesn't even know is there!

no problem. ive used just about every solvent on the market, and have come down to 2 i use frequently, and one occasionally. for frequent use its butchs boreshine, and gunslick's foaming bore cleaner. for the occasional heavily fouling gun, i use sweets 7.62. sweets is worthless on powder fouling, but will remove copper better than any other.

Hoppe's has really fallen behind times, hasn't it? It's what my grandpa and dad used, but it has long been replaced in my cleaning supplies. Has anyone here used Blue Wonder? This stuff is amazing. It's a little pricey...about $8 a tube, but it will get anything off or out of your gun. It removes rust without harming the bluing, and is good on copper, lead and powder residue. Leaps and bounds from the old Hoppe's #9.

M Pro 7 is doing a great job getting the copper out of my M700. Very little if any ammonia, too.

Amen! I love Birchwood-Casey Gun Scrubber, and their synthetic gun oil, too.

RMB, I use the Blue Wonder when cleaning a new/old gun the first time, and to clean extremely fouled bores. It's too expensive for general cleaning, but it gets out stuff that even Bore-Scrubber misses! Great for a pitted milsurp bore!
I have their blueing kit too, but haven't used it yet.
