Thumbs down Newbie shooter with question about saftey glasses and ear protection

Hey Guys,

I'm a newbie shooter just getting into the hobby. I am looking to buy some shooting glasses. Now what is the difference between all the colored lenses? Does it matter what color or brand name I buy?

Also does it matter what type of ear protection I buy?

Yep in my opinion it does..Amber lenses gives you a better contrast.
I have seen some go to dark amber to red but red limmits any thing red in its wave leingth. Some of the Science types know more about that
than I. As for hearing protection an ear valve type pf plug or muff
allows you to hear normal or sort of normal sound but limmits
the the high volume crack of the shot. You may pay anywhere
between 30 and 300 bills for either...

The plugs that are molded to fit the inside of your ear are the best plug you can use. They're pretty cheap too because they last a long time.
Always wear some kinda eye protection, amber seems to give me the best contrast between target and background.

You want some type of polycarbonate (plastic) safety shooting glasses. Color is personal preference only, but they do need to be impact resistant, which is the key. For hearing protection, I use the EAR foam earplugs (roll up like a golf tee and put into the ear). It's also a good idea to use these in conjunction with the over the head hearing muffs -- double hearing protection--this also can diminished perceived blast as you get started and make shooting more enjoyable.

Definitely double up on the ear protection. Something to put in your ear AND muffs. I shoot at a public range and some people's guns are very loud. Doesn't hurt to be extra safe.

I could not agree more with double protection of your hearing. I use plugs and muffs. I even hunt with baffled ear plugs in. I have permanent hearing loss because when I was young I thought it was manly to shoot pistols with out hearing protection. That was until I shot a round of PPC in an enclosed space with out hearing protection and was deaf for three days. That woke me up to reality. Now I have a constant ringing in my ears and some people's voices I just can not hear with any background noise at all.

MY point...Don't take chances with your hearing! Protect them ears well!

i shot a .338 without hearing protection and my ears rang for a couple of hours, and that was outside in the open. after that i got a cheap set of midway ear protectors that are like ear muffs. they work very well but i shoot outside and theres never more than one rifle or pistol shooting at once, and they work great execpt when the butt of the rifle pushes up on them sometimes, but they still dappen the noise even then.

Thanks Guys,

I went to my local sporting good store today and bought a combo pack remington muffs and clear glasses. Also grabbed a pair of yellow glasses and ear plugs.

Great advice thanks again,

J

Go with the amber lenses. Make and style is your choice. I highly suggest that you take your ear muffs along and try the glasses with the muffs on. The arms of some makes and models hurt abit when used with ear muffs. Get at least 2 different pair.
Listen to these guys...PROTECT YOUR HEARING. A cheap pair of glasses is one thing...a good set of muffs is totally different.

For glasses I feel it is 100% personal preference. I like clear myself. I think it gives the most natural view of the target. Ear protection on the other hand, MORE IS BETTER. You will often see people at the ranges with just the drug store ear plugs. That may cover the range minimum but is foolish. Most good ear muffs will say right on them what decibel level they are. Go as high as you can. I also use the ear plugs inside my ear muffs. You only have one set of ears and only one sense of hearing. Protect it.

i have never heard what most of my guns really sound like.
my hearing protection is always behind the seat in my truck.
it's a good habit to develop.

I wear custom made plugs, after I lost the hearing in one ear for several days, I went to an audiologist friend who is also a shooter. I asked about muffs over the plugs and said it wasn't needed. An old instructor of mine always said to wear plus and muffs because the bone behind your ear will transmit sound to your inner ear. My audiologist said BS.

I wear corrective lenses and usually get my prescripion in dark yellow for contrast when target shooting. For qualifications I wear my glasses or sunglasses, same as if I was Working or off duty.
