MP40 this time?

Ok well im going to ask about the MP40 this time LOL, well anyways I was thinking about getting one for maybe a backup gun to an AK/47 for if there ever really is some type of civil war in America, you know your shooting then all of a sudden you run out of bullets in your last clip. So you sett you AK down then whip the MP40 around and start shooting it, well anyways you get my point. So does anyone know alot about them, or maybe shot one, I think they run around 1,200 for a nice one with a foldable stock. I saw one on mail call last night and it looked and shot pretty well, so I just had that itch to ask about them.

MP40 for $1200??? A transferrable full auto version??? Toss in another zero and it may be real.

No, I would say an MP-40 is NOT a good gun to have in that scenario. If you have a problem with running out of ammo in your AK, getting another gun with its own ammo is not what you want.

If you're afraid of running out of ammo with your AK, get more ammo instead of a 9mm subgun. Subguns have the advantage or high cyclic rates and lower recoil than an assault rifle (I'm talking in the military sense, not our civi-legal semi-autos).

You could also spend your money on an armored fallback shelter.

If you want a backup gun, MP-40 is a bit big, and for its size, isn't as good as more recent developments such as the HK-MP5. I myself would choose a semi-auto pistol and get good with it. If you want compact, consider a short barreled AK (registered under the NFA)

As we've said before, the MP-40 is a collectible historical arm. That is why someone should buy it. If you have another use in mind, get something more recent. Something to consider is the AR-15 system. You can get pistol caliber conversion upper halves for it and just switch it out with a lower. No it shouldn't be done on the battlefield, but it offers you options on one versatile system.

The purpose of having more guns is not to pick up the next when the first runs out of ammo, at least not in a combat scenario. Only in a CCW scenario, keeping a small pistol tucked away as a fallback in case you lose the first or it runs out. Mag changes are still almost always preferable to gun changes.

No, the reason for multiple guns is variety to cover DIFFERENT uses. Subguns have higher cyclic rates, lighter ammo, lighter recoil, and more maneuverability than assault rifles. This means they're better in close quarters combat. Assault rifles are designed to be the optimum of close and far range. A subgun will still almost always be better for short range (assuming the bullets hit hard enough) and a sniper rifle will always be better for long range. Assault rifle tries to find the happy medium. Notice though that in WWII units like in Saving Private Ryan, some guys had subguns, some had M1 Garands (higher power, lower capacity than assault rifle), some had M1 carbines (lower powered than assault rifles), one had a bolt action sniper rifle, and one had a BAR as a Squad automatic weapon.

You can't do everything with one package, though you can reduce the number of different guns from the Saving Private Ryan posse. Point is you have to know how to use each one and what each is best for. And you can't be carrying around many guns at once. Possibly two, but in those cases one is your primary and you don't carry too much ammo for the backup. Like you'd probably carry many assault rifle mags and then just a few pistol mags.

One more thought on a civil war scenario... If it's you against a large numbered force and you're fighting alone for your land, and your land only, you're not fighting for the right reasons. If you have a family, they should be your reason for fighting, and you should take their training and their skills and their preferences as seriously as your own. If you don't have a family, don't ever fight a war alone. Find people who you can join or who will join you.

I just thought that was pertinent when discussing a scenario of you with your AK running out of ammo for it and grabbing another, presumably on your own.

Exclamation

If you are serious about FA weapons, it pays to do some research. Try Google-searching on what you want, and check the gun sales and auction sites.
I just searched on "MP40" at GunsAmerica, and found two MP40's.
One is $9,800 with a spare parts kit, the other is a complete weapon brought back from Viet Nam - $12,000.

For comparison, I've seen FA weapons in the following price levels:
Ingram/MAC/Cobray - $1200 to $1500 Tend to be simple, crude, heavy for their size. Accuracy in the "spray&pray" category. Entry level for full rock&roll.

STEN - $2000 to $2500 Still crude, but actually a very good shooter. "Minute of Coffeecan" at 50 yards is easily possible on a short controlled burst or semiauto.

M1A1 Thompson - $7000 to $10000 depending on variables. Excellent quality, heavy (12 pounds!) and accurate on semi-auto but tends to ride up on FA.

Steyr AUG - $12,000 Superb quality, exceptional accuracy. Parts are available, but expensive. The Mercedes Benz of subguns.

The prices of FA M16's seems to vary a lot, as do the prices of AK derivatives.

Basically, FA is a richman's game. You'd be buying ammo by the crate too.

BRG3 is right about the practical uses - more ammo for your primary weapon is preferable. Also, if bugging out is necessary, it's a lot easier to carry one gun and more ammo.

of course with full auto make sure to get all the proper paperwork so the storm troopers don't bother you and they will inspect you from time to time.
