| The SAR8 is Springfield Armory's version of the HK91/G3 rifle. Supposed to be a very good rifle. Far above the Century Monkey-assembled guns.

If he doesn't have any proof...you may be about to buy something that's not his to sell. Remember, if it's hot, and LEO's trace it to you, at the least you'll be out the $1,000 if that's what you pay for it. But...from what's been posted above...if it's in the same condition as in the link...then it sure would be a desirable gun to own. :right:

| darn right...could i call the authorities and see if it's been reported stolen if i had the serial number?? i really want that gun but i just got off probation for recieving so i cant take any chances or theyll think im stealing guns or something |

| Super Moderator ![]() ![]() | In that case I would definitely pass on the gun. Too many scenario's could develop from your request from LEO's. Then only consider buying guns from registered dealers, or from someone in which you have total confidence in it's authenticity and legality. I'm sure you wouldn't want to do anything which could bring LEO's down on you a second time.

| Senior Member | Call the police and ask them nicely if they could run the serial number through NCIC, almost any department will do it for you over the telephone. Possession of a stolen firearm is a class A felony, then it's up to you to prove where you got it. Anytime I look at a used weapon that's not in a reputable shop, I wear latex gloves to handle it until I own it, and the first call I make is to the police department with the serial number. They have always been happy to do it for me, they don't want you buying a stolen gun any more than you do. "Life is too important to be taken seriously."

| Here in Ohio, you must physically take the weapon to the local PD. They won't run just a serial number over the phone. They take physical possession of it until the check is completed. If it's legit, they'll call you and let you know. If it's not, they'll ask you some questions about who, when, and where. If it's legit, you'll have no problems. Otherwise, you'll have to prove you knew nothing about it being hot. They won't throw you in jail, or anything like that. But, they'll want to know where you got it at, who you got it from, and when you took possession of it. |

| Senior Member | You can call another agency, just because you live in Ohio doesn't mean you can't call another cop shop, I live in Vermont, when I found an ad for a CZ75 in N.C. I called the PD in Eden, NC. and they ran the number for me. I don't see why Ohio wouldn't do that over the phone, you want to know before you buy. I deal with my home town more than anyone, simply because I have that number in my phone. Call your local PD and ask, tell them you won't buy until you know, the seller showed you the weapon and you took down the number. It's not an unusual, or unreasonable request. Even when you buy used from a dealer, a gun could be stolen, the only difference is you have proof where you got it. A low life can steal a gun, take it out of state and sell it to a gun shop, not many shops will call the PD to check the number. In New York a shop cannot buy a pistol that isn't listed on your permit unless you bring in a LEO to confirm the gun has been checked. My local dealer gets people calling to get serial numbers from guns they bought years before, because the gun was stolen and they never recorded the number. He doesn't charge for the service and it can take him hours to find the record of the sale. "Life is too important to be taken seriously."

| Otter, the laws in Ohio are set no matter where you live. They must have the weapon in their possession to run it through LEADS. I've had this question posed more than a hundred times while on duty. |

| Super Moderator ![]() | I have an FA-91 that is pretty similar to the SAR-8, down to the aluminum receiver with integrated scope rail. I paid $500 for mine. There were extras that made it a good deal in retrospect, but I probably could have done better. If you have any reason to believe that the guy selling is less than reputable, DO NOT BUY. There are a zillion things that could be shaft you besides it being stolen. Remember the parts compliance fiasco? There are friends I would buy from and there's everyone else. Whenever I do a private sale, I exchange signatures and some government ID# for private records only, stating that the buyer can legally buy and that I am the lawful owner of the gun when I sell it. If it ever became an issue, you could then check up on it. If all is well, then the records can just sit there inaccessible to any illegitimate parties.
