| Senior Member | I haven't really been a gun guy, especially the old military collectors stuff. I figured Big 5 would not have the best price, and the ad said it was reworked and refinished. I went and looked at one and it was OK...it had a lot of gouges and scratches that had been finished over, and the bolt was not very smooth, would get caught trying to close the action and I'd have to jerk it around to get it closed. I think when I get a safe, I'm gonna get some of these old military FAs... |

| Senior Member | The bolts are supposed to do that. Quote:
The bolt on the Mosin-Nagant is supposed to do that. On open, it cocks the hammer back a pretty good amount. On close, it finishes cocking the hammer. That being said, the ones at Big 5 are almost always in the cocked position, so you can't really see it when you close the bolt because you can't pull the trigger. I picked up an M1891/30 from my local Big 5 on my 18th birthday about a month and a half ago. That's basicly just the older, longer version of the Mosin Nagant - the M44 is the newer, shortened one. The bolts are a little odd, but once you learn how to use them, you don't mind it as much. It takes some effort to open the bolt if you don't really, really clean the thing (read in the Mosin forums about cosmoline). Ammo is pretty cheap. I figured if you bought online from the right spot, you can get milsurp ammo at just under $3 per 20 rounds. Winchester ammo, though, is $13 per 20 rounds, which doesn't work so well. I've gotta say, my Russian 91/30 is good, and it's a ton of fun. Supposedly, those Russian M44s kick a bit more, and you get a nice fireball of a flash out of the muzzle. $90 plus tax and trigger lock (required for gun purchases in CA) is $140-ish out the door. It's a nice gun, even though the stock isn't in the best condition, but it takes a while to get most of the cosmoline out of there. They've all got history behind them. They were used in WWI, WWII, Korea, and Vietnam, to name a few. | |

| Senior Member | Check out the gun shows in your area for ammo and other Mosin Nagants. I have a M91/30, an M44, and a M91/30 that belongs to my better half. I have fired 100s and 100s of (hand loaded) rounds through mine and am completely satisfied with it. Mine was $49.00 about 10 years ago. In my opinion, the M44 does have a considerable increase in "kick" over the M9130. I just bought an M44 from Classic Arms for $79.00 and it looks pretty good. I will let you know how it shoots in a day or so. Nick |

| Resident Armed Liberal ![]() | If you look around,, you can probably still get surplus 7.62x54 for about seven cents a round. You usually have to buy a 440-round spam can or other unopened can or case to get that kind of price, but how can you argue with that kind of affordability? Thirty or forty bucks will get you hundreds of rounds; sixty or seventy will keep you shooting until the cows come home. And you'll have enough left to shoot them too, if you want. |
