Mas-36

I just picked up a MAS-36. It has an interesting green Algerian symbol(green star and cresent) painted on the stock. The serial is in the M68XXX range.

I do know that the "M" means it was Manufacture Nationale/Impériale d'Armes de Saint Etienne (MAS).

Does any one have/know any good sources or information for the history of this weapon?

Does it still fire the 7.5x54mm rimless cartridge, or has it been converted to .308?

It is still chambered for the original 7,5 x 54. When I took the rifle home, I bought a box of 20 cartridges for $14.95. The box is marked MUNICOES DE ARMAS LIGEIRAS.

I bought the MAS-36 more for collecting than shooting. I'm close to having one rifle from each country involved in WWII.

I think the historical value in this weapon lies not in it's WWII roots, but in the Algeria's bid for independence from France.

Did it come with the white surrender flag?

Nice rifle; been looking for one to go along with my 49/56 Mas.

i picked up a mas 36/51 about 10 years ago it has a gernade launcher and sight mounted on the end of the barrel. i could never figure out the forward bent bolt but when you assume a bayonet stance you can work the bolt with ease. the froggies were always into the cold steel bit so maybe this is why it is bent that way. or perhaps it makes it easier to shoot it over your shoulder when your running away.

Um, are you talking about the "M" in the serial number or in Mas? The "M" in the serial number I believe is the series. I believe they used 0-99999 then changed the series number and started over. I believe the got to around series "L" when when the war broke out. "M" series is post war I think.

The bent bolt allows the receiver to be further back , yet still operable, so you can keep a longer barrel and get a carbine size rifle, too. Looks odd, but it works.
