Rissian M.44 Carbines

So I get this email from a buddy the other day telling me about some awesome deals on some rifles, so good that I would be able to buy 5 or more if I wanted and it would cost too much.

He sent me this link (http://www.dansammo.com/firearms.asp).

If you scroll down to the bottom you'll see what I'm talking about. They are selling these babies for 79 and 89 bucks a peice. I couln't resist and contacte my guy in the states to get me a few so they'll be waiting on me when I get back. I've never heard of them before. I have heard that the 7.62x54 for them are somewhat corrosive but you wouldn't have any problems if you did propper maintenence. Could anyone tell me a little about them?

Thanks, Charlie.

OK, well, first of all, you need to look into the Mosin Nagant forum on this site. You'll find it under Military Firearms.

Those prices look about right on, from what I see. Don't forget to factor in shipping and background check fees.

The ammo is usually corrosive, especially if you use miltary surplus, which is cheap and plentiful. You'll want to run some windex on a patch down the bore to neutralize the salts in the corrosive primer. Then clean them normally. You will see lots more information on the Mosin forum.

Oh yeah, have to warn you, these things are fun and ADDICTIVE. There are a lot of countries that made them, and lots of variations. The M44 has a side folding bayonet, the M-38 does not. The M91/30 is longer (and kicks a little less) and has a spike bayonet. These things are a blast, I have 2 myself so far, but am always planning to get more. Good luck and be sure to let us know if you get em.

Thumbs up

Thanks. I'm somewhat of a rookie as of now. I have been living overseas for four years. I have never heard of the widex thing before.

What add-ons do you suggest?

Posterboy, the M44 and it's cousins are the best "bang for the buck" in firearms today. Small, handy and powerful, yet very inexpensive.
A good cleaning handles the ammo issues well.
Romania made the M44, as well as ammo.

I just got my M-44 with matching serial #s and a great looking stock. 80 bucks is a great deal on a sweet gun. My only question , if anyone has experience with them , is can you use the wolf ammo with the steel casings in these guns OK?

Yes, Wolf is just fine. The only issue you might have is the laquer on the casings sticking, but that happens with most laquered cases. As for wondering if the steel cases are okay, absolutely! The majority of your military surplus is either copper-washed or laquered steel cases. Finding brass casings is actually hard to find in mil-surp. If you want brass, reloadable, non-corrosive, then go buy some Wolf Gold; yes, Wolf makes a fine round for that. Also, most mil-surp you get is going to be corrosive, but that is not a big problem; just rinse out the barrel liberally with ammonia or soapy water, dry with a patch and clean as normal. This cleaning must be done IMMEDIATELY after shooting to prevent any sort of surface corrosion. For lots more information and good stuff for mosins, go check out the Mosin Nagant forum in the Military Firearms board here on G&G.

Also, I started a Mil-Surp Ammo thread that has a lot of good info on it and some others over there have started ammo-specific threads. Check 'em out.
