| I didn't realize you needed square projectiles for Turks and round projectiles for Christians. Surely, I'm reading that wrong!

| Resident Armed Liberal ![]() | I've seen that before, about square bullets for Turks and round ones for Christians; I think it was on some naval gun. The general idea is that weapons considered unsporting or inhumane against other Christians were just fine against Muslims or whatever. For example, in an earlier age a Pope banned the use of crossbows, but only against Christians. As a matter of fact, the unraveling of a very good fake Italian Renaissance painting a few years ago started with someone's observation that the subject on horseback was armed with a crossbow against Christian opponents. Although the Italians did use them against each other, the expert pointed out that a painter of the time would have been unlikely to commemorate on canvas someone blatantly defying a Papal decree.

| I had always heard that the Pope outlawed the use of crossbows not against Christians but against the nobles. |

| Resident Armed Liberal ![]() | I don'ta think so, Despoiler Quote:
In 1097, Pope Urban II outlawed the use of the crossbow. 1139 AD --- Pope Innocent II condemns and forbids the use of the crossbow by Christians against Christians by saying they are "deathly and hateful to God and unfit to be used among Christians." On the other hand, there's no doubt that the mounted, armored nobility were less than thrilled at the thought of some lout of a peasant putting a quarrel through them and their armor before they ever got within broadsword range.

| The 'painkillers' being hashish and opium. I don't think it could be called properly a machine gun by today's standards since a flashpan would have to be filled for every shot. Maybe a 'rapid firing' flint, match, or wheel lock, whichever it may have been. Rapid firing, maybe, but slow loading, no doubt. And switching cylinders between shooting at Turks or Christians. Probably needed a carriage to mount the tripod on and carry the gun, just being careful not to shoot the horse. Probably worked good until they really needed to use it, then it's shortcomings showed up pretty quick. |
