Lovin the K-31

I purchased a bunch of guns recently from classicarms.us few ak's, a saiga, and a k31.

Well I've had a chance to shoot all the ak's which are awesome in a fun crazy way, but i've been looking for some ammo for the k31, and i finally got around to visiting my local surplus dealer and sure enough he had a case of the swiss surplus ammo "good stuff"

Well I finally got around to taking it out today after meeting with a client. I also got my dad to come out and take a few shots with it.

We Had a box top "12"x18" set up at about 125yards. It was a rushed setup and i just scribbled a circle in the middle of the target. I let my dad shoot it first and he immediately commented how great the trigger was and how well the action cycles out the shot round.

AFter he shot a few rounds i gave it a try. " It was love at first shot" I wasn't even expecting to put it on the target "didn't have contacts in" but my dad was spotting while i shot. Sure enough all my first few rounds were in a 2" group.

Me and my dad took turns shooting the rifle and eventually went through 20rds of the surplus ammo which functioned flawlessly. All 20 shots were in a circle about 5" with 2 flyers. With alittle practice i can't imagine how accurate we would be with this rifle.

I plan on keeping this k31 all original and buying another one and completely restoring it and using it for a deer rifle next season. My only concern is the rifle dosen't have a saftey?? Is it possible to load a round in the chamber and decock it until it time to fire then cock it with the finger pull???

While i'm talking about the k31. Why in the world do modern firearm makers not make the straight pull designs. The straight pull is so much more natural and faster than any bolt gun i've ever shot.

K-31's are sweet. If you plan on buying another, do it soon, they are drying up.

See here for info on the safety:

You should also look under the buttplate for soldiers tags. k31's are great rifles they have the absolute BEST stock trigger on any surplus rifle out there. also if your going to refinish it and make it a deer rifle you could buy a clamp on scope mount if you wish to use a scope. here's an article on one Collecting and Shooting the Military Surplus Rifle (2006) - Surplusrifle.com

The K-31 is a fine rifle that DOES have a safety. The safety is engaged by pulling the cocking ring out till a square, flat section of metal that is part of the cocking ring piece becomes visible by protruding out of the back of the bolt on the bottom of the cocking rings rod. Then, once this is visible, rotate the ring approximiately fourty five degrees clock wise till the fore mentioned square section of metal is lined up with the cut out that is at the nine o'clock position on the back of the bolt, then lit the cocking ring pull back into the bolt, This is in full safety position. The bolt is locked and the rifle will not fire. There is also a "Half safety" in that you can have the square section of metal simply rest on the back of the bolt between the cut outs that are at the six and nine o'clock positions. I would not recommend this being used as a primary way to set the rifle to safe because of how easily it would be to bump it out of that setting. How ever, that setting does allow the bolt to be operated freely while keeping the rifle from bein able to fire. I hope this helps, if you need any help with understanding how to operate the safety you may message me and I'll try to explain it a little better, seeing how I sometimes can't think of the best way to explain things the first time. lol :-) Good luck, and enjoy these fine rifles!

Thanks for the responses guys. I can't wait to get another one ordered. I think i'm just gonna play the odds with classic arms and hope i get a pretty one. I just ran into a bit of unexpected cash and it burning a hole in my pocket. I'm going to get another k-31 and a case of the surplus ammo. "Stuff is great" Now i don't have to worry about not having a saftey and the scope mount looks like a breeze

I'm trying to get my dad to buy a few of them for the prospect of the value increasing more. I doubt they will ever loose value, and honestly he could buy 10 k31's for the same amount he has in one of his over and unders "What a waste imo"

A few years ago, you could get these things for 79 bucks. Too bad I hadn't caught the mil-surp bug yet. Ok, I'm off to work on my time machine now.......

I know it makes me sick to think of that not to mention i imagine it was easy to get one in better shape then. I guess the price of actually owning one then vs now would be about the same because it was real hard to get ammo for them a few years ago and now it's very plentiful.

I can't wait to till next years deer season. Before the first day of season we all go and sight in our "fancy deer rifles" Other than my dad and my uncle I'm pretty much sure i'll be able to outshoot everyone else there with the k-31 open sighted. All those guys think they have to have some huge 300wsm to kill a 200lb deer. The problem is they all flinch b/c of the recoil and don't group worth a crap.

I think you will do just fine deer hunting with that thing. Just make sure to practice with the ammo you are going to use. Good luck and keep us posted if you get anything.

While you calling Classic, get a 24/47 as well. Best value on the market, and they're tack drivers. Classic gave me a gun with basically a new bore.

K31's were $79 to $129 a couple of years ago, 24/47's will go the same way. Mauser ammo is still relatively cheap.

I think you save if you buy 3 from Classic

I've been debating the 24/47 also. Is that a yugo made gun??? the picture on classic looks very nice for the price. From what i've read i didn't figure them to be all that accurate. I will definitely keep them on my list once i get my C&R.
