WWII german pistol, help on history

hey, this is my granddad's pistol that he had. It is a 32 acp, it is hammerless, one magazine that holds 9shots. I know that he was in WWII and fought at Normandy, all he ever told me is that it was a german pistol. the only markings on the gun is a 9 on the grip. I was wondering if maybe some of yall knew anything about it and could give me some history on it. Thanks

I found the pics...It is Not a Broom handle Mauser. It appears to be one of the "Velo Dog" type pistols, the 9 indicates Magazine capacity! It appears to have been heavily refinished, and if there are no markings visible it is hard to say who made it , as There were Many copies throughout Europe.
