P-38 assembly question

I recently bought a WWII P-38 that was missing its retaining block and spring. I bought the parts from CDNN and have looked at schematics, but for the life of me I can't figure out where the spring goes. Can anyone help? If the spring goes in the little recess under the barrel ahead of the locking-block recess, is the curved part of the spring supposed to poke through that little hole? Because mine does not fit through.
Is the spring even necessary?
If anybody can help, I'd be grateful.
