Dragunov Rifle

Dragunov Rifle
7.62x54R
Dragunov Rifle<br>7.62x54R<br>Part #DRA-GUN - DRA-GUN
I was thinking of purchasing one of these. Anyone out there have one? What have you guys heard about it. I wanted a svt40 but I keep reading about all the problems. It's a little long but it's the only other 7.62x54 semi auto that I know about.

That ad is Mis-leading...That is a ROMAK and not a Dragunov...Other than Cosmetically, it is Nothing like a true Dragunov action...We have discussed this many times on the forum...They are Sold out of the Romaks for now too.
A TRUE Dragunov starts at about 2000.00 UP !

I've held that very rifle.

It's shorter than you'd think... at least to me it was.

I saw no resemblance to the AK-47, other than the cosmetic parts.

I dunno. You may want to research it a bit more, or call Centerfire and ask some questions about it, if you have any. They're really nice people. =] I'm sure they'd be glad to help you out.

I want a semi 7.62x54 rifle. It really doesn't matter if it's the real dragunov or not as long as it's a good rifle.

Moose, when are you going to be sending my Dragunov "Tiger" back to me? You said you'd only need it for a couple weeks. LOL

A little history

In the earlier days of the Vietnam conflict the CIA had an offer of
$25,000.00 for one of these rifles.

The Russian rifle from that period was found to be combat tough but it was not found to have target grade accuracy.

So they, the CIA, wanted to pay or would have paid or probably paid, $25K for one just to copy it? Because it worked and worked well I take it?

To GlockMeister

Not to copy it.
To completely understand the engineering, the metallurgy, the ballistics,
the quality of construction, and the accuracy.
It was part of the ongoing program to accumulate Russian and Chinese weapons with the goal of always equipping the American military with
superior weapons.
In the early days of Vietnam it was thought Russians were in the field using the rifle against American forces.

Or this? Atlantic firearms - AR15 & AK47 rifles - Olympic arms at wholesale prices.

They actually market it as a dragunov....I was contimplating ordering one. centerfire seems to be a better deal if they were in stock.

So you are saying I guess loosely that a lot of places are calling any kind of semi-auto that fires 7.62X54R a Dragunov? Or is it just Romaks?

I owned one for about 2 years back in the early 90's (when the REAL ones sold for less than $800.). I traded it at a gun show because it wouldn't shoot groups acceptable to what I thought a rifle reputed to be a "military sniper rifle" should print. On its best day, with the very best loads I had worked up for it, it would barely shoot 1.5 MOA in a 10-shot group. There were 3 shot groups that would hold inside 1 inch, but they were the exception.

Back in the 70's, you couldn't get Coors anywhere in the St. Louis area... so when you could find it, it carried a price tag associated with the allure of something you couldn't get easily. After owning the Drag, I put it in the same category... and traded it off. And now, of course, they're much higher. But you can get 3 GOOD shooting AR's for what you'll pay for a Drag. But to each his own. If you want one, have the cash, then by all means GET one.
