Aha! The light just came on. We're talking apples and oranges without realizing it. There are Colombian Mausers made by Fabrique Nationale, and there are Colombian Mausers made by Dansk Industrie Syndicat AS 'Madsen'. The Madsen Mausers are the ones with the nice recoil pad and pretty wood, etc.

The FN Mausers have plain old buttplates and the usual undistinguished wood.

Back in 1971 I joined Dekalb County PD Ga and ordered a M1 carbine from an arsenal through the PD. I got it for $49.00, delivered to my front door. A Winchester of all things. It rode with me in the front seat of my patrol car for 22 years. Can drive tacks with it. That one will be across my lap when they roll me into the nursing home.
