Military surplus arms rural police

Well I think it;s great they do this. I mean, let's face it. They could just destroy them all. I seem to remember rather then do something like this with a bunch of, what were they, M14 I think it was, Clinton ordered they be destroyed? I'm sure "SOMEONE" will correct me if I'm wrong.

But, yea, I think that's a great idea. Many small towns don't have the tax base to be able to get them and some small towns are being over run with gangs for just that reason. They too know that small towns generally don't have the money to b able to have or get the firepower to match there's...

I'll take an M14 and a couple of 1911's.

The youngsters can have the M16's.

I see they nuetered the M14's for semiauto only. Perhaps there is hope some will reach the civilian market.

Many small town PD and SD departments have benefitted from military surplus for decades - nothing new in that. If they can arm the officers to be at least on a par with the druggies and other filth, so much the better. What they really need is revised "Rules of Engagement".
Need far better intel too - far too many cases of 'mistaken addresses' and innocent home-owners attacked and even kiled by over-eager SWAT teams.
Save that for the real criminals......

I would love to see some semi auto m14s and semi m16s sold through CMP. I mean if they don't sell those then how much longer is the CMP going to be around?

Good story , Glad to see peace officers with good gear .
Some departments and individual LEO'S have been using M1 Carbines in a similar rural situation for years.

M1 Carbines from police units in Italy , Germany , and the ROK have been returned to the US over the years. Some came through DOD to CMP , but many ( maybe most ) of the cop guns came home as civilian imports.

My first patrol rifle was an M16A1 but now I've upgraded to an LWRC M6A1 (new piston driven carbine). That M16 was a tack driver with the 20" barrel. Anyways the carbine is better suited for law enforcement in local suburbia. At least I know I'll give Mr. Jihad a run for his money. Sure beats the 12 gauge slugs we were using as a stop gap after the North Hollywood incident.

I actually talked once to a guy whose apartment was raided by mistake. The police were given directions to the second apartment from the end. Seems no one took into account that the building has TWO ends.

I find it a bit strange the police in the US are getting so much firepower. I am glad these firearms are not being destroyed, but why on earth should a cop have need for a fully automatic rifle in his/her squad car? I am also not sure about police using an M-14. I have one, and can attest to the power of the .308 round. That round can travel a long ways, and go thru much before being stopped. In a hostage situation, I would not think it wise to use anything other than pistol or frangible rounds to counter the bad guys, unless a sniper is involved.

Why has the US destroyed so many M-14s over the years or given them to other countries? Why not store these in National Guard armories? At least they are not being cut up or given to others on the other side of the border.

What I would like to know is what happens to these firearms if and when the local police department decides the guns are surplus to their current and projected needs. Do the local PDs have to give them back to the yankee gummint, or can they dispose of them as they see fit - say by selling them to private citizens? (That is, presuming the officers or deputies on the force don't obtain them as surplus or bonuses or something.)

We live in a pretty sparsely populated area, a lot of farm ground and woods, Meth labs are popping up, and I think that its a good thing that the cops are armed well!!

Well you do see police Glocks and other firearms for sale in Shotgun News, probably only the semi-auto rifles will get the the public!

I second your thoughts. Cops have the right to do their job but way to much liability involved with fully automatic weapons. Plus no one round here has the cajons to get in a fire fight with the cops or least ways they haven't yet.

Dude, some of the places i've lived sounded like Vietnam on new years eve. gangbangers up the street from us had at least 3 full auto AKs, they'd go rock and roll at midnight and burn through at least 500 rounds
i could see why cops would want more firepower going after something like that.

It's also the reason i got my family the hell outta the city
