| In my opinion, military loads of the 7.62Tok prove to have way too much penetration to be an effective killer. It will kill, but it also may go through a few walls. The 9mm Luger on the other hand is a much better defensive cartridge. With +P loads, and bullets weighing up to 147 grains, it is definitely a better and more proven cartridge. Not to mention the Beretta M92 is going to feel so much better in your hands, and be so much more accurate than the TT-33. |

| Another bit of advice: If you haven't locked your decision into those two handguns, I would also look at the CZ-75, and perhaps some striker fired 9mm handguns, like the S&W M&P (my favorite), or a Springfield XD. |

| I don't know if its true with the TT33 but when they re-barrel CZ 52 s to 9x19 relialibilty goes down the drain. the gun was designed for the longer 7.62 round and the shorter 9mm doesn't feed right. besides half the attraction of the TT or CZ52 (to me anyway) is the 7.62x25 round. it is HOT for a pistol round.

| I have taken mine to the range just once so far. It was incredibly INaccurate. I was surprised that I couldn't hit a thing except the man sized steel targets. I could not hit the steel plates for anything with the TT33. I was surprised. I expected a much more accurate pistol than that.

| Senior Member ![]() | I used to have a pic of what a 9mm and a 7.62 Tok round does to 1/4 inch steel but it got deleted... 9mm dented it....7.62 Tok put a hole in it....

| You can't compare accuracy of a military surplus handgun to a civilian handgun made by a company like Beretta, S&W, Colt, Kimber, Springfield, H&K, etc... Well, you can compare it...it's just not pretty. The Beretta will be many times more accurate, and the 9mm Luger is going to be a better self defense round than the 7.62 Tokarev. |

| It's pretty simple: Military Surplus guns, such as AK-47's, SKS Rifles, CZ-52 handguns, or the TT-33, are usually made from very crude processes, often with stamped steel, and done to produce mass amounts of weapons at the smallest cost possible. The goal is to arm your military with a reliable handgun that the soldiers can use easily. If you pick up an AK-47, CZ-52, or TT-33, you'll notice right away that the spacing tolerances throughout the gun are very low. The edges are not finished very well, but everything works. The slide may seem sloppy, and as a result, you will lose accuracy, but possibly gain reliability. Now pick up a Beretta M92, S&W M&P, Springfield XD, or Kimber 1911. You'll notice right away that the guns are more balanced, made from better materials, and have parts that fit together very tightly. The barrels on these handguns will be of much higher quality than barrels on military surplus guns. In short: A military surplus gun is lots of fun at the range. They are often very reliable, and somewhat accurate. A modern handgun made by Beretta, S&W, Springfield, H&K, Kimber, etc, will almost always perform better. The downside is that you may spend twice as much (or more) on a modern handgun over a mil-surplus handgun. If you're going to be at the range and are going to use the gun for punching paper, then a military surplus gun is a great way to go. If you are going to carry the gun concealed, or use it as a home defense gun, you might want to consider something of higher quality. Remember, your life may depend on it. |
