Police Enjoyed His Window Display
Bonehead award one, a “too dumb to be a criminal” bonehead award, goes to Donald Steven Atwood of Forrest City, Arkansas who, while driving his car, decided to get the attention of the driver in the car next to him, a stranger, by dangling from his car window a small bag filled with a green, leafy substance which turned out to be marijuana, according to police officer Ricky Baxter, the driver in the car next to him whose attention Atwood succeeded in getting.
Atwood was found to have other drugs and drug-related items in his car.

Cat Got Your Brain?
Bonehead award two, a “too dumb to own a cat” bonehead award, goes to a Laguna Beach woman who had Animal Services officers rush down to her home after she claimed that her cat was pinned under a mattress and was dying because, in the words of one of the officers, “she had just gotten the cat and she assumed it had died because it wouldn’t come when she called.” The cat was healthfully enjoying the events from a high up location.

Disappearing Ink, Russian Style
Bonehead award three goes to Pravda. This is the same Russian newspaper we gave a bonehead award to in our July 23, 2002 issue for their health tip article advising readers that picking their noses will prevent respiratory infections (click here). This time they earn a bonehead award for their recommended way of erasing ink from paper.
Advising their readers, “you should try and find out it’s effective” they describe how one can use 10-20 half starved cockroaches to erase ink. They claim that children invented it to erase poor report card grades.
“The new method is as follows,” advises Pravda. “You should catch 10-20 cockroaches, put them into a small box and starve the insects for 2-3 days. Then you should pour some sweet syrup on the hateful poor mark in your diary and draw the diary open wide closer to the box with cockroaches. Yekaterinburg pupils say that hungry insects will immediately devour the syrup together with the ink and the space under the poor mark on the paper will be clean once again. Isn’t it a wonderful idea?”

Coming Back To Get What They Deserve
Bonehead award four, a “too dumb to be a criminal” bonehead award, goes to two Overland Park, Kansas, men who cashed two stolen $500 traveler’s checks at a hotel and then returned later to the same hotel to ask that their $20 room deposit be returned, police said.
