I know there are members from Louisiana here. So, I have a question for you. On the History channel's show, they use a rifle to shoot the gator before bringing it into the boat. My question is this; what is the most commonly used caliber for that purpose?

that's what i thought. they didn't sound very loud, and one family was using what looked like, at first glance, a ruger 10/22. never would have thought that a .22 would be enough to pierce gator skin. thanks!

On that show I saw a Marlin 60SB, Ruger 10/22 all weather, Savage Mark II F, Heritage rough rider, and some other bolt action. All of the ones that I recognized were .22lrs, although they couldve had the .22mag cylinder in the Heritage Rough Rider.. They said there's a spot the size of a quarter on the back of the gators head that you must hit to bring it down. Interesting....
we use .22's anything bigger would do to much damage darn near every part of that gator is used nuthing goes to waist. one good pop in the head and he's dead. we done took 11+ footers with .22 never needed anything bigger. and to think some folks say a .22 can't drop a deer i tell you what that gator hide is 10 times thicker and stronger than a deer hide.
I remember either a magazine article or tv show where a guy was chest deep in a swamp hunting alligator with a bolt action rifle of some sort. Either he was crazy, or his brass ones weighed too much to get into the boat, !!

a well placed shot is what does it. a larger caliber bullet will go thru the head and put a hole in the valuable soft skin under the neck. the Fla. gator hunt rules don't allow you to use a gun at all. bow or harpoon and a bang stick to finish it off. we are not even allowed to use a baited hook like they do on that show. they have got it easy in La.

Tommy, pig farmers like to say they use every bit of the pig but the squeal. I don't expect to be in a position where I ever need to use every bit of the 'gator but the hiss, but I'd appreciate if someone like you who does know what an alligator is used for would educate the rest of us as to what you can do with which parts of the 'gator, and how you go about turning a dead alligator into useful parts.
eat the meat dry and sell the hide and dry and sell the head nuthing goes wo waist when you get a gator. the leg meat can be eatin also not just the tail. thats some good meat to slow cook on the grill man it's some kinda good dass what it izz.
i'll try to dig up some pictures of the 10' we came across while riding in the canefield.the gator was atleast 3 miles from any water source he was just chillin out on the side of the dirt road.
Why isn't Gator farmed and sold !! As a renewable resource ?? There ain't no Gator Steaks up in my grocery freezer !! I have every animal but gator !! Canned, frozen or fresh !! Is there no one able to comply ??

there are a good bit of gator farms down here infact there is one about 5 miles from my house. as for as the meat i don't know why it's not sold all over the country . you can't even go into a store down here and buy it you have to know a farmer or go to a specialty meats market and buy it. it is a very stinky meat when you cook it but it has a good taste to it.

It is! Gator farming is big business! It is also a source of restocking as well! Gator farms release an amount of each year's hatch back into the wild.

Returning to the hide for a minute: do you go about treating it the same way you would, say, a cowhide? Scrape the flash off it, stretch it out in the sun to dry it, then soak it in oxalic acid solution and then stretch it again before you dry it some? My experience with tanning is limited. I've done a couple of deer hides from road kills, a couple or three raccoons, and once four lambs back when I was trying to be hyper-authentic in a medievalist group and needed either leather or fur for trims. I never tried to do a reptile.

i never seen the hide done before but i would say it's diferent from regular fur but i could be wrong.
