| Retired Moderator | Should I be shot for this?
If only I was at my own computer and I could post pics... Thinking about what I want in my next vehicle when a few ships come in, I'm considering a used Crown Vic. But I'm used to a Bronco II and will have to have some off-road ability (ie rough roads and fields). So I thought of putting a mild lift on it and giving it high traction tires. So does anyone think I should be shot for this? What if it was a Chevy, like a Monte-Carlo?

I personally have driven 3 Crown Vics over the past 10 years and consider them the best cars on the road for overall performance and service. Parts avalibility is not a problem either if you have a starter go bad, ect. They do not drive as well as Lexus LS 400's, but you won't have any trouble getting help on the road if something goes bad. Anyone tried to change a tire on a Lexus while on the road... not a good experience...

Forget the car and get a girlfriend. Maybe she would perform better with a lift.

If you're asking about lifting a Crown Vic and putting off-road tires on it, all I have to ask is if you want a blindfold or not.

I despise Lexuses. They're nothing but overpriced gold lined Toyotas. Get a Toyota and buy more guns. Or buy some for me. Or buy me a new car with the leftover money.

When my Mother's estate was settled several years ago, I ended up with her car which was a 1990 Lexus LS 400. A sweet ride for sure, but highly impractical for anyone once it goes past 100,000 miles due to the cost of upkeep. Parts are KILLER PRICED and the Lexus service centers gleam you for every $ you have. Guys, when the waiting room in an auto dealership serves a full brunch while you wait, you KNOW you are being plucked like a Tyson chicken!

I am strong, but even I find a Crown Vic too heavy to lift.

The vic is a good car and can handle minor offroad but nothing aggressive. Why don't you look at something in the light duty suv class like the 4 runner -- if you want the luxury find a used Cherokee the best of both worlds

Be sensible here. The Crown Vic is a car, NOT a suitable platform for lifting. Buy a Cherokee, Blazer, Bronco, or anything else designed for that purpose. Lifting a car is impractical. Kinda like putting mud flaps on a dragster.

First, I think you need a last meal and a blindfold. Second, if you where to try you lift idea, to do it might will be a lot more expensive then you think. There are no off the shelf lift packages for the front end. By the time you go through with all the time, money and effort it would be easier to have just started with a truck of some kind. For interstate driving or long trips its hard to beat a Crown Vic/Marquis, even zipping down gravel roads it handles better then most trucks. When you drive it through a pasture though, you can just hear the suspension groan and a lot of little rattles you never notice otherwise.

All good points. Here are the reasons for the idea: As said before, great for riding on any roads. And chances are a used Crown Vic is going to be in better shape than a used truck, ie grampa's church car. It wouldn't be for serious off-roading, and not a major lift either. Just enough to slip some superior tires on it and be able to handle rough roads and fields without bottoming out. But maybe it isn't a great idea. I'd go for a Cherokee any day if it had a manual tranny and wasn't rusted to heck. But the auto trannies drop like flies. Ford transmisions kick butt!

ok done ranting about worthless suvs, you might consider an ex cop vic, they are used by just about every police agency in the country, heavy duty suspension, cooling, and beefed up motor, that might suit your needs, you cant order the cop version, but its tough as nails

Anothering to consider is a '91 or older model, they still have the chrome bumpers and seem a little tougher on impact when you "find" a fence post in the middle of nowhere. They also have the 302 instead of the 4.6, much easier to work on.
