thanks for posting this, as it's allways a good reminder as to what can happen when you get careless, even for a second. i brought my 12 yr. old son in to see the picture of your hand and told him what happened then i asked him what should have been your response and he just looked at me and said that you should have let it hit the floor. [proud poppa] i guess he has been listening to me when we are at the range.

FRAME IT??!!??
He should dig it out, and run to his backyard and bury it...man, could IA have fun with this one.
His PD should make him the department poster boy.
I nominate Jay for Shooter of the Year. LOL
Just kidding, Jay.
Heh heh, now the fun begins, Jay.

A few days ago, in chat, I mentioned to some that I had injured my hand. True... I said it was due to "getting crosswise with a piece of metal". What I was too embarrassed to admit was, that the piece of metal was a 9mm JHP.
I've since decided that perhaps this could be a learning experience for other folks.
One of the local LEO's and I were standing in my gun room, looking at my firearms.... one at a time.... checking each one, to be sure it was empty. Then came the SW-99.... press-check... I looked, empty... LEO looked, empty, magazine empty, and out of the gun.... released the press-check, and between the press-check and locking the slide back, I lost my grip on the gun. Reflex I guess, but I reached for, and caught the gun before it hit the floor, but I also caught the trigger. The round in the chamber that neither of us saw, discharged and went through the soft, meaty part of my left hand.
No broken bones, no sutures, just dressings for a week then go see the doc again. I have full range of motion with all my fingers, and no pain. Had I simply let the gun fall to the floor, there would have been no problem. But no, I just had to catch it.
Lesson... failure to follow one safety rule could have been fatal. Adherence to "keep the gun pointed in a safe direction" prevented anyone else from getting hurt. I hadn't fired that gun in a couple of years, but that's no excuse. I am 100% certain now, that there are no loaded firearms in my safe.
Apologies for misleading those in chat the other night. Stay safe folks.
Ooh, you didn't happen to get any wound data or any pictures did you? What an opportunity. I mean hey, you are already shot. Might as well make the best of it, eh?

Lot of respect for you here Jay. I am not sure I could have come clean....but this is truly something worth sharing. It could in fact save someones life although we would never know. Hope you heal up quick buddy.
Jay, thanks for the honesty. Gives us all a reason to rethink our safety practices. I know I get complacent.....I will be more vigilant..Glad the outcome is ok........
The first time my son shot his mom's Bersa, he said "Dad, there's something wrong with the trigger". I asked him to come back to where I was and to hand the gun to me. Our first and most important rule is that NO ONE is in front of the shooter, that is everyone is to be behind the firing line, until all weapons are placed on the deck or whatever. I got the gun and made sure everyone was behind me and unarmed. I held the pistol at about 10 o'clock and touched the trigger. Bam, it scared the bee-jeepers out of me, but we were all safe..It rattled me so much I stopped shooting for the day.
Glad your ok jay. Just checked all of my guns that shouldnt be loaded and felt the inside of the chamber. And I just reiterated the rules of gun safety to my buddy and gr.
Hope you have a speedy recovery my friend

I viewed the photo. It's bad, but it could have been so much worse. I wonder if the big bone there in that part of the hand was damaged, or only the flesh? There will certainly be some nerve damage, but he should regain the use of his fingers eventually if there wasn't any damage to tendons. Therapy will probably be painful, but it will be worth all the effort when he can squeeze a tennis ball again. I sure hope it works out well for you Jay. The best of luck to you during your recovery. I got my hand cut badly when I put it through a glass door once, lots and lots of stitches and one cut came really close to the arteries in my wrist, it exposed them, but didn't cut them. That was rough, but those glass shards weren't moving at a thousand feet per second.

Fact of the matter is, if everyone reads the entire post, "kidney stones are more painful than a gunshot wound". That's straight from the horses mouth.
Just trying to make you feel better Jay.
Blake
Ballbearing... I really did luck out. It's simply a flesh wound. I never lost range of motion, or flexibility in any part of my hand or fingers. No damage to any bones, or significant structures in the hand.
Blake, I meant every word of that... I've never suffered so much as I did due to that kidney stone.
