Plastic Ammo!

New plastic telescope ammo machine gun is light as a rifle ? The Register

Combine that with the predator ammo pack recently developed by our boys, and there's no good reason why a heavy gunner couldn't carry 2k rounds linked to the gun at all times.

Serious business.

I expect box mag variants to follow, featuring lighter barrels and 40-50rd magazines.

Our boys would be carrying just 1-2 spare mags.

Less weight, more firepower, win, win.

As long as it's piston driven. . . We each need one!

First thing they need to do is up-gun it to 7.62 NATO instead of 5.56 Poodle Shooter. Secong thing they need to do to is is come up with a better cooling system if they plan to rip off long bursts with it.

Other than that, it looks pretty cool. And if they can mate it to the field-expedient "Predator Pack," boy, will the squad machine gunners have something new and different!

plastic cased shotshells have been around for years, i'm surprised it took 'em this long to do the same with rifle ammo.
i used to shoot these at pheasant in the early 80's

Yup 7.62's the way to go. As a new convert, i'd say this is the better round hands down.

With the lighter case and weapon, we may see a return ot the 7.62 as the LMG. I'd be for it.

Fellas, I agree that the 7.62X51 is the stuff to use! It's been around a long time, and the snipers have it's ballastics memorized for those long wishful shots that they seem to make without visible effort! I wish I had enough memory left to do that! I bet they can see the trajectory in the air, just as if it was a road map!

I've been thinking about it for a while now. I think with the new ammunition and gun, it's time for a new round. I think a 6-6.5mm 110-130gr slug, with about 80-90% of the energy of the 7.62 would give you the range, penetration, wound cavitation, and rate of fire of 90% of what either the 5.56 or 7.62 is capable of. Making it a better round for general use than either, considering the drop in weight of the ammunition and rifle.

I'm thinking the .243 Win, in a fully automatic weapon would be vicious.

With modern compensators, recoil control, lighter plastic casing, etc, we should step up from the 5.56 to something with more punch. Perhaps the 7.62x51 is it. Just me thinking out loud.

I remember reading up on the German Stuff in the 80's.. it was wicked! But I do agree that the .223 is on the Anemic side for a fair amount of it's roles. Like several others I feel that something in the .243 range or close to the same power and trajectory would be optimal, although maybe a little less hot so that you still have a good combination of power and penetration at distance with a high cross sectional density for flat shooting and energy retention with having weapons and barrels that will hold up with minimal maintenance.
