$300,000 Falls From Armored Truck; $260,000 Still Missing Two Men Arrested For Allegedly Taking Cash At Scene POSTED: 6:58 a.m. EDT August 21, 2003 UPDATED: 7:03 a.m. EDT August 21, 2003 GRINNELL, Iowa -- Iowa state troopers are continuing to investigate how more than $300,000 fell off an armored truck on Interstate 80 somewhere between Des Moines and and Grinnell. Police said the Lewis Systems truck was headed east on I-80 about 6 p.m. when its rear doors opened and cash and coins spilled onto the roadway. Troopers said $260,000 is still missing. Two men from Las Vegas have been arrested on theft charges for snagging some of the cash. About $60,000 was recovered at the scene. Officials said a faulty rear door mechanism may have been the reason the doors opened. They're also checking to see if it was intentional. The Iowa State Patrol said up to 60 people stopped to gather cash, with most of them turning it in to police. State officials said amnesty will be granted to anyone who returns money by 4 p.m. Saturday. Lewis Systems offered a reward for information that leads to recovery of the cash. The reward will be ten percent of the amount recovered from the information. Copyright 2003 by The Associated Press. All rights reserved.
